Converse, March 8- Approximately 70 people , relatives and friends
gathered at the home of MR. and MRS. CLARENCE HAMMETT, March 4, to
celebrate the 95th Birthday of their grandfather, R. HUGHEY,
Converse's
" grand old man ".
A dinner in picnic style was served in the dining room and every
dainty imaginable was in evidence. A large cake, studded with 95
candles, adorned the center table. Many bouquets of beautiful roses
and numerous other gifts of love and esteem, were present to MR.
HUGHEY, while he passed the time comfortably seated in a beautiful
rolling chair, a highly prized gift of the Spartanburg Chapter,
U.D.C.
Though slightly maimed, he retains a clear mind and remarkable
memory and he graciously entertained his friends narrating
experiences had during the four years service in the War Between the
States. MR. HUGHEY participated in many skirmishes, as well as
several of the outstanding battles , being in the midst of
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, receiving a head
wound at the latter place which disabled him from service for around
40 days.
