Confederate Veteran, Vol.XVI, July, 1908.
At the first call to arms, in 1861, JAMES
A. LATHROP on Jan. 9, 1861, volunteered at Newberry, for the Confederacy under
Capt. Whitfield Walker, who took his company to Charleston, S.C., and united
with Maxey Gregg's First Regiment. They assisted in building forts and
batteries until after the surrender of Fort Sumter. He was then transferred to
the Virginia forces, remaining at Richmond and Fairfax C.H. until the
expiration of his six months' term of service. Upon the reorganization of his
company he was one of the first to re -enlist for three years of the war. He
remained with his command- absent only when wounded, always ready for any duty
in camp or on the firing line-until the surrender at Appomattox. His recent
death has left a gap in the ranks of his comrades at Newberry, where he was
Lieutenant Commander of Stonewall Jackson Camp and one of its most active and
zealous members.
