HENRY ABBOTT
Carolina Spartan
Wednesday, March 16, 1892
HENRY ABBOTT
Friday night, March 11, 1892, HENRY ABBOTT quietly passed away. It has
been evident for the past year that the end was approaching. He was never
certain about his age for he had no record of it. MAJOR WILLIAM FOSTER
says that his mother , MRS. FOSTER , died several years ago, and that she
was born December, 1795 and she was certain that MR. ABBOTT was born the
February before. They grew up together in the same neighborhood and she
was positive that she was correct. That would have made him 97 years old
in February. MR. ABBOTT thought that he was in his hundredth year.
He was a peculiar character and was as well known in this county as any
man who ever lived here. For many years he was court constable and crier
of public sales. He was a kind hearted man and was always ready to
accommodate friend or neighbor whenever he could.
He made a most liberal contribution to the Confederate war eight of his
boys having gone into service. Four of these gave their lives for their
country. He was perhaps the oldest man in the county. For several years he
has been taken care of by his son, A.J. ABBOTT. He was buried Saturday
afternoon from the Baptist church of which he was a member.

JOHN
EDMUND ANDERSON
Laurensville Herald
Jan. 21, 1898
JOHN EDMUND ANDERSON died October 26, 1897, at the home of his uncle, MR.
J.W. ADAIR, at Greenwood, aged 23 years. Son of MR. J.R. and MRS. FANNIE
ADAIR ANDERSON. His mother, dying when he was about 8 years old, left him,
one sister and one brother to become the step children of her younger
sister, MRS. DELLA ADAIR, who, assuming the responsible position of a step
mother, lovingly and tenderly watched over the children of her departed
sister with fond guardianship of an own mother, so much so, that she
assures us that she had never known any difference in her feelings for
them to her own three.
At the early age of eleven he joined the Methodist church under the
ministry of Rev. BOYD. His parents often spoke of him as a treasure fit
for the great treasury above. At school he applied himself with vigor and
intelligence to every detail of educational interest. The better part of
his education was received in the Presbyterian College at Clinton, by his
gentle manliness and cheerful companionships. We are told by one who knew
him well, that - " A truer, nobler, trustier heart, more loving or more
loyal, never beat within a human breast".
