Dec 10- the friends of Mr. W. H. Bagwell and family deeply sympathize with
them in the loss of their son, Charlie, whose death occurred in a hospital
in Columbia Monday. The body was brought here and interred in the
Presbyterian cemetery. Rev. Mr. Brown, of Woodruff, conducting the
service.

DROWNED NEAR PELZER
Anderson, June 24, 1904- EARNEST BAGWELL, a young white man, about 21
years old was drowned in Saluda river near Pelzer on Saturday afternoon.
He was in the river bathing with his friends and dog. The dog got tangled
in some brush , when BAGWELL started to the rescue got into water over his
depth and went under. He rose to the surface once and then sank never to
rise again. His friends made every effort to find the body, without
success and it was not until Sunday morning that was recovered. BAGWELL
was a very popular young man. His parents are dead.
BAGWELL was a native of this county and at one time resided in the Cedar
Springs section. His remains were brought to his former home Sunday and
interred at Cedar Springs yesterday.

Funeral services for J.J. BAGWELL, 65, night watchman at the Spartan mills
who died at his home on Manning street Friday night after a long illness,
will conducted from the Oak Grove Baptist church this afternoon. Burial
will be in the churchyard.
He is survived by his widow, MRS. MITTLE BAGWELL, and by the following
children of a previous marriage; MRS. CORA DANIEL, Charlotte, MRS. MYRTLE

Mrs. Sallie
Driskill Bailey, 80, wife of Henry David (Uncle Bud) Bailey, of 114 Phifer
Street, died about 4:05 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Cherokee County
Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for the past month.
A lifelong resident of Cherokee county Mrs. Bailey was a member of the
Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the
Draytonville Baptist Church. The Rev. C. E. Hampton, of Cherokee Avenue,
the Rev. Jesse M. Hill, of Greenville, the Rev. L.N. Epley and the Rev.
Ray Maynor officiated. Interment was in the Draytonville cemetery with the
Shuford-Hatcher Company morticians, in charge.
The pall bearers were Carl Blanton Jr., Kenneth Bailey, J.C. Moore, Larry
Sanders, J. B. Tillson and Everett Horne.
In addition to her husband Mrs. Bailey is survived by seven daughters,
Mrs. June Horne of Spartanburg, Mrs. A.R. Tilson of Greenville, Mrs. Inez
Miller of Kings Mountain, Mrs. D.L. White of Kings Mountain, Mrs. Cleve
Moore of Kings Mountain, Mrs. J. F. Sanders of Pelzer, Mrs. J.T. Rogers of
Chattanoga, Tenn.; two sons, Alfred Bailey of Gaffney, and Grady Bailey of
Cowpens; 47 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and one great-great
grand child; one brother Roland Driskill of Gaffney; one sister Mrs. Lena
Holmes of Gaffney.

Spartanburg, Nov. 18- Funeral services for PRESTON H. BAILEY, 46, business
man of Cowpens and son of the late REV. and MRS. J.D. BAILEY, of Cowpens,
who died at his home Wednesday after a long illness, will be conducted at
the Cowpens Bapt. Church this afternoon. Interment will follow in the
Cowpens cemetery.
Active pallbearers : EVERET MARTIN, ROBERT BROWN, ARTHUR PETTY, JACK
HUMPHRIES, MARION HAMRICK, and OLLIE HARRIS.
MR. BAILEY was well known in the city and county. He formerly had his
office in Spartanburg, doing business as stock and bond and insurance
business. He was reared in Cowpens where his father was a Baptist minister
for many years.
He is survived by his wife, MRS. VIOLA BAILEY and the following children :
HELEN SUE, HOWARD, JANIE, VERNON, SELMA, J.D. and ROBERT BAILEY, all of
Cowpens.
Three brothers, F.H. and J.C. BAILEY, Cowpens and M.B. BAILEY of Boston,
two sisters, MISS IRENE BAILEY and MRS. BELL MARTIN of Cowpens also
survive.

CAMPOBELLO - Berry Ballew, 82, of Rt. 1, Campobello, died at home
Sunday at 5 a.m. after several years of declining health.
Born in Greenville County, a retired farmer, son of the late Malon
and Elizabeth Gosnell Ballew, he was a member of Walnut Hill Baptist
Church. His wife was the late Mrs. Ila Page Ballew.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. C.E. Wilson and Mrs. Nolan
McElrath of Inman and Mrs. Terell Turner of Gramlin; two sons, Hoyt and
Ansel Ballew of Rt. 1, Campobello; a brother, H.E. Ballew of Inman; 19
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 4 p.m. at Walnut Hill
Baptist Church by Rev. L.N. Epley, Rev. Furman Jackson, Rev. James
Alverson and Rev. Fred Bryant. Burial will be in the Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ray and Garland Ballew, Wesley Turner, Glenn
Wilson, Gerald McElrath and Leroy Mathis.
The body is at the home and will be placed in the Church at 3:30 p.m.
Petty Funeral Home, Landrum, is in charge.

MR. BALLEW DIES NEAR UNION TUESDAY
J.T.A. BALLEW, who lived in the Lisbon section of this county a number of
years, died at his home in Union County Tuesday morning, following an
attack of acute indigestion on Sunday night. After the death of his first
wife, who was MISS OLIVE WHARTON, he moved back to Union. The following
account of his death and burial was sent out from Union: Union, June 15-
J.T.A. BALLEW died at his home four miles above Union yesterday....
The burial was held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Upper
Fairforest church, conducted by the REV. L.L. WAGNON and the REV. L.M.
RICE.
He is survived by his widow, who before marriage was MISS MAMIE DARBY of
Chester and 7 brothers. He was 70 years of age and died within a few yards
of the place of his birth. He was a successful farmer, living in Laurens
for nearly 40 years but for the past few years has resided in Union. For
many years he was connected to the State Fair Assoc. and was well known
and esteemed by many people over the state. |

GRAMLING - Lionel Ballew, 62, died at his home Tuesday morning.
He was a native of Spartanburg County, a son of the late James and Lottie
Horton Ballew. He was employed at Gramling Marketing Co. and was a member
of Holston Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lavada Brymer of Spartanburg and Miss
Dianne Ballew of Gramling; two sisters, Miss Odelle Ballew and Mrs. Eula
Sherbert of Spartanburg; a brother, Broadus Ballew of Rt. 3, Inman; and
four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Holston Creek
Baptist Church by the Rev. Guy Lawson and the Rev. Tom Holroyd. Burial
will be in the Church cemetery.
The body is at the home after 2 p.m. Wednesday and will be placed in the
Church Thursday at 2 p.m. Petty Funeral Home of Landrum is in charge. |

INMAN, Jan. 18 - Mrs. Annie Barnett, 79, died in a Spartanburg
hospital Wednesday after a lengthy illness.
Survivors include her husband, Thadeus Barnett; a son, James Barnett;
one brother, W.P. Burnett; three grandchildren, three nieces and three
nephews.
Funeral services were held today at Boiling Springs Baptist Church,
conducted by Rev. Joseph G. Wood. Interment was in the Church cemetery.

INMAN, Aug 16 - J. R. (Jim) Barnett, 67, widely-known resident of
the Holly Springs section, died at his home at 4:30 p.m. today at Inman,
Route 3. He was born and reared in Spartanburg County, lived in Greer
for 20 years and in the Holly Springs section for the last 12 years. He
was a member of the Holly Springs Baptist Church and of Oak Forest Camp,
W.O.W. of Greer.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Martha Mills Barnett; two sons, Clarence
Barnett of Greenville and T.E. Barnett of Inman, Route 3; one brother,
Tom Barnett of Gray Court; and four grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by
the Wood Mortuary of Greer.

INMAN, Mar. 27 - J.W. Barnett, 71, widely known resident of the
Holly Springs section, died at his home on Route 3, Inman, Monday night
at 11:30 after an illness of four months. Mr. Barnett was born and
reared in upper Spartanburg County and was the son of the late John W.
and Nancy Barnett. For a number of years he was bookkeeper and cashier
for the Gramling Brothers at Gramling but prior to his illness he was
engaged in farming.
Surviving are his wife, who was the former Miss Sallie Layne before
marriage, and two daughters, Mrs. R. E. Lyda and Mrs. Bert Cantrell; two
sons, Lt. John L. Barnett and Lt. Eldridge C. Barnett. Mr. Barnett was a
member of the Holly Springs Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 4 o'clock at the Holly
Springs Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. W.Y. Henderson, assisted by
Rev. C. E. Puett, Rev. Eddie Lieberman and Rev. C. B. Prince. Interment
will be in the Church cemetery.

GREER, Sept. 20 - Joe S. Barnett, 67, well known farmer of the Holly
Springs section of Spartanburg County, died suddenly Thursday night at
10:40 o'clock from a heart attack at his home.
Barnett was born and reared in Greenville County. He was a member of
the Holly Springs Baptist Church.
Surviving are his widow, who was Miss Janie Clayton before marriage,
one son, Horace Barnett; an adopted daughter, Miss Effie Barnett, and
two brothers, James and Tom Barnett.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the
Holly Springs Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. C.E. Puette, assisted by
Rev. W.Y. Henderson. Burial will be in the Church cemetery.
Nephews will be active pallbearers: T.E. Barnett, Clarence Barnett,
Eber Clayton, Jess Clayton, R.E. Clayton, J.D. Neal, Rosman Clayton and
Thomas Barnett.

CAMPOBELLO, June 18 - John J. Barnett, 90, retired farmer of the
Motlow's Creek section of Spartanburg County, died at 11:30 a.m. at his
home today. He was born and reared in upper Greenville County near
Gowansville and was a son of the late James M. and Rosie Dill Barnett.
He had made his home in Spartanburg County a number of years.
Surviving are seven children, James O., John H., Sam S., and Russell
P. Barnett, Mrs. W. J. Loftis, Mrs. L. B. Farmer and Mrs. A. A.
Littlefield; 25 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 5 p.m. at Motlow's Creek
Baptist Church of which he was a member, by Rev. Paul Maybry and Rev.
Thomas E. Reid. Burial will be in the Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be T.J. and Fred Loftis, Frank and Dean Barnett,
Dean Carruth and Harold Ragan. The following were requested to meet at
the Church at 4:50 to serve as an honorary escort: J.H., L.B., and J.A.
Farmer, B.E. Mills, J.L. Petty, Sr., Melvin Barnett, D.N. Loftis, P.B.
Underwood, Dr. S.J. and Dr. T.E. Morrow. After 10 a.m. Monday the body
will be carried to the home. It will lie in state at the Church from 4
p.m. until time for the service.

GOWANSVILLE, July 26 - Funeral services for Randall Barnett, 74,
who died July 23 at the home of Branch Suddeth at Inman after a week's
illness following a stroke of paralysis, were held from Holston Creek
Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, The Rev. Mr. Smith,
assisted by the Rev. R.R. Brady, officiating. Interment was in the
adjoining cemetery, beside his wife who died 16 years ago.
Mr. Barnett was born and reared in Greenville County, moving to
Spartanburg County some 25 years ago. At the time of his death he was a
member of the Converse Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, D.F. Barnett of Landrum, R-2, W.R. Barnett
of Spartanburg, R-1, and B.S. Barnett of Spartanburg, R-1; two
daughters, Mrs. John Patton of Tacapau and Mrs. Charles Krause, of
Clinton. Twenty grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren also survive.

daughters, Misses Clara, Mary Lou and Emma Sue Barnett, of Inman.

LANDRUM - Harrison Barnette, 73, of Church Street, died Tuesday at
6 p.m. at a Spartanburg hospital after a long illness.
Native of Greenville County, son of the late Fletcher and Della Belue
Barnette, he was a retired textile worker and veteran of World War I.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lily Smith Barnette; two daughters, Mrs.
Lucille Ellis of Charlotte, N.C. and Mrs. Jeannette Ball of Spartanburg;
a son, Paul Barnette of Salisbury, MD; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Suddeth
of Inman and Miss Emmia Barnette of Landrum; and two brothers, John
Barnette of Inman and Boyce Barnette of Fletcher, N.C.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Petty Funeral Home.

ENOREE - Jeanette Lawson Barnwell, 58, of 5645 Cross Keys Hwy. died Feb.
7, 2001.
A native of Spartanburg County, she was the wife of Thomas Barnwell and
daughter of the late Jesse and Martha Brewington Lawson. She was a member
of Trinity United Methodist Church and was an employee of Hardee's/Hot
Spot on Highway 146.
Survivors in addition to her husband include one son, Bruce Barnwell of
Enoree; one daughter, Sandra Lynch of Cross Hill; three brothers Otis,
Ashmore and Monroe Lawson, all of Enoree; and two sisters, Annie Sumner
and Frances Wilson, both of Enoree, and two Grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Lanford Funeral
Home in Woodruff.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home,
conducted by the Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will follow in Trinity
United Methodist Church Cemetery.

GREER, May 31, -- Miss Lizzie Belle Bass, 23, of Bass Street in Greer,
died Tuesday afternoon at 3:25 at a hospital in Spartanburg after an
illness of three weeks.
Miss Bass had made her home in Greer all her life, and was well known
and had many friends who will be grieved to hear of her passing.
Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Bass and the following
brothers and sisters; Rev. J.W. Bass of Ward, J.H. Bass, J.D. Bass,
Robert Bass and Miss Florence Bass all of Greer; Mrs. Nancy Jane Hamby,
Misses Lillie Mae Bass, Nettie Sue Bass, all of Anderson.
Miss Bass was a member of the Victor Baptist Church and funeral services
will be held from that Church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted
by the Rev. H.W. Stone, assisted by the Rev. Walter Harrison. Interment
will follow in the Zoar Church Cemetery near Greer.
Further announcements will be made by John D. Wood, Mortician.
Until the hour of funeral the body will be at the late home on Bass
Street.

GREER, Nov. 15 -- Manning Benjamin Bass, 72, well known citizen of
Greer, died at his home on Mason Street Tuesday night at 11:15 o'clock
after declining health for several months.
Mr. Bass was born and reared in Spartanburg County and was the son of
the late John and Easter Wilson Bass. He had made his home in Greer for
a long number of years and was engaged as a carpenter and contractor. He
was a member of the Victor Mill Baptist Church and was also a member of
the Oak Forest Camp No. 67 at Greer.
When a young man he was married to Miss Catherine Reynolds, who survives
together with eight children, Rev. Jessie W. Bass, Branchville; J.H.
Bass, Greer; Mrs. H.W. Hamby, Spindale, N.C.; J.D. Bass, Clinton; Robert
L. Bass, Mrs. Paul Scarboro and Mrs. M.C. Goforth, all of Anderson, and
Mrs. J.S. Rice, Marietta; 11 grandchildren, one sister, Miss Lillie
Bass, of Greer.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the
Victor Mill Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. R.P. Lamb, assisted by
Rev. Walter Harrison. Interment will follow in the family plot in the
Zoar Cemetery, near Greer.

4 KILLED BY TRAIN IN GREENVILLE
Greenville, July 16, 1947- MRS. AMUDIE LEE BROWN BATSON and her 3
daughters were killed Tuesday when their car was thrown more than 70 feet
by a Southern Railroad train at a grade crossing at Taylors, 8 miles north
of here, County Deputy MILFORD FORRESTER reported.
FORRESTER said that in addition to MRS. BATSON, the victims were her

64, died at Roebuck Thursday night. He was a former member of the
Spartanburg city police force. MR. BEARDEN, lived for many years in the
city and was a respected citizen. He moved to Roebuck about three years
ago.
Surviving are his widow, MRS. CAHADIE BEARDEN and the following children;

PIEDMONT WOMAN DIED IN HOSPITAL
MRS. CARRIE BELL, wife of J.L. BELL, died in a Spartanburg hospital Sunday
morning. MRS. BELL'S home was at Piedmont, S.C., but she was brought here
for treatment several weeks ago. She was 43 years of age. The body was
shipped Sunday on the Piedmont and Northern Line railroad to Piedmont,
where the funeral services will be held today.

Anthony B. Belue, 72, of 170 Bon Air Avenue, died at a local hospital
yesterday afternoon at 1:45. He was a native of Greenville County, but
had made his home in Spartanburg for the past 28 years.
He was a retired farmer and merchant.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Flora Belue; 2 daughters, Mrs.
Corrie Wofford of Landrum and Mrs. Eddie Bailey of Union; 7 sons, T.A.,
S.L., T. Frank, Homer E., Jonah M. and E. Raymond Belue of Spartanburg

May 28, 1907- MR. A.J. BISHOP died in the hospital in Columbia yesterday
morning, where he went for treatment some days ago. The remains will
arrive in the city this morning and the funeral and interment will be held
at Liberty church. REV. B.M. ROBERTSON officiating.
MR. BISHOP was the father of J.W. and E.E. BISHOP and an uncle of A.C.
CANNON of this city. He had been in bad health for some time and was sent
to the hospital several days ago for treatment. He had many friends in the
city and throughout the county who will regret to hear of his death.

GEORGE W. BISHOP, CONFEDERATE VETERAN, PASSES AWAY IN TEXAS HOME
George Washington Bishop, an old Confederate veteran, passed away March
5th 1913 in Rains County, Texas. He was nearly eighty years old. He
was born at Spartanburg, South Carolina (Oct 13, 1832) and came to this
county when quite a youth. He volunteer from Paulding County Georgia.
He was a member of the First Georgia Cavalry, Col. Morrison's Regiment,
Gen. Joe Wheelers command. He leaves a wife, five sons and two
daughters in Texas and one son in Alabama. He is my last brother. There
were sixteen of us brothers and sisters. They have all been taken and I
am the only one left. He said I have fought a good fight and I shall
quit the walks of men henceforth, I shall walk with the Master.
Therefore, I go not as one having no hope for I expect to meet him
there. George Washington BISHOP, was wounded on the retreat from
Chicamauga to Atlanta, being wounded in the head with a piece of shell
in 1864. He was never able to be with his command afterwards.

Note from Roxie Bishop: I believe George and Rebecca to be the children
of Daniel Morgan Bishop of Spartanburg. George married 7 times and was
father to 15.
It was said that George's parents died after 1850 and the children were
dispersed to relatives in Georgia. George remained in Spartanburg
temporarily with family slaves before he left for Georgia. I would love
to hear from anyone who could find some information about this family.

Funeral services for MRS. HUGH S. BLACK, 30, wife of DR. H.S. BLACK, who
died Wednesday night at the Mary Black Hospital after a 4 months illness,
were held Friday afternoon at the late residence on Palmetto street.
Interment following in Oakwood Cemetery.
MRS. BLACK is survived by her husband, son of the late DR. H.R. BLACK and
the late MRS. MARY L. BLACK, and her parents.
MRS. BLACK was MISS IRIS BURRUS before marriage, daughter of Dr. and MRS.
J.T. BURRUS of High Point, N.C., her father being president of the N.C.
State Board of Health. DR. BURRUS was in charge of the surgical department
at Camp Wadsworth during the World War and his wife and daughter lived
here during that period.
MRS. BLACK attended high school at High Point and graduated from Converse
College in 1924. She was married to DR. BLACK in Sept. , 1925. She was a
member of the First Baptist Church.
Active pallbearers were : T.G. WRIGHT, J.C. JOSEY, R.R. WALKER, J.R.
SNODDY JR., ED TENNENT, RICHARD FERGUSON, J.G. GALBRAITH and TED BOYD.
The physicians of Spartanburg and neighboring counties had been requested

FUNERAL IS HELD FOR WOMAN WHO KILLED HERSELF
Funeral services were held this afternoon at Eden Wesleyan Methodist
Church for MRS. ADA BLACKWELL, 44, who committed suicide late yesterday by
hanging herself from the ceiling of her husbands barn near Fingerville
with a plowline...
MRS. BLACKWELL'S act is believed to have been the result of worry about
her health and the separation of her daughter from her husband; it is said
that financial conditions could have played no part in her action.
MR. and MRS. BLACKWELL had lived in Fingerville for some time. They were
good neighbors, had never quarreled , were together whenever possible and
were highly respected, the neighbors said.
She is survived by her husband, W.M. BLACKWELL; 2 sisters, MRS. VIOLA
SPLAWN and MRS. EDITH MaHAFFEY, both of Chesnee; a son, N.O. COLE, 20 and
a daughter, MRS. GILBERT WILSON, 22 of near Thickety. Both are children by
a former marriage.
The funeral will be officiated by REV. T.E. JOHNSON of Chesnee.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from Friendship Presbyterian
church for MRS. ANNA TUMBLIN BOLT, wife of LAURENS BOLT, who died early
Monday morning at the family home near Hickory Tavern, from the effects of
a pistol wound. The services were conducted by the REV. W.A. BALDWIN, and
loving tribute was paid to her memory. She had lived in the community all
her life and was known to be an home-loving wife and mother, a good
neighbor and kindly friend.
The deceased was a daughter of the late MR. and MRS. JAMES TUMBLIN. She is
survived by her husband and one son, RICHARD BOLT of Laurens who is
connected with the local laundry and by two brothers, WADE TUMBLIN of near

MR. T.J. BOLT died at his home in the Poplar Spring neighborhood, on the
11th inst. The deceased was a well known , popular and highly respected
young man. He had not quite reached his majority, dying in the 21st year
of his age. The deceased leaves a widowed mother, 4 sisters and 2
brothers, and many friends and relatives to deplore his early demise. His
remains were buried at Poplar Spring Church.

JESS P. BOLTON, RURAL POLICEMAN DIES AT HOSPITAL
JESS P. BOLTON, SR., rural policeman of Spartanburg for 18 years died at a
local hospital this morning after an illness of six weeks. MR. BOLTON was
born at Cowpens, a son of the late JESS PINCKNEY and MARY WALKER BOLTON.
Surviving are his wife, MRS. MATTIE BOLTON, 2 daughters, MRS. HERBERT
STEPHENS and MRS. ROBERT COTHRAN, both of Spartanburg, rt.3., one son,
JESS P. JR.; four sisters, MRS. BUD SCRUGGS , near Cowpens, MRS. NAN
BOGANS, MRS. BOYD HUGHEY and MRS. MALLIE CROMER, all of near Mayo and two
brothers, BUD BOLTON, Cowpens and LEWIS BOLTON , of near Mayo.
Services will be at the First Wesleyan Methodist church of Spartanburg by
the REV. J.B. HILSON, MAJOR FRANCIS BIRNIE of the Salvation Army and the
REV. MR. KNIGHT. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be fellow officers of the county force.

PACOLET MILLS - Grace Robinette Bowen, 96, of 15 Brewster St., died Nov.
22, 1988, in Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
A native of Virginia, she was the widow of the Rev. Enoch Smith Bowen and
daughter of the late Morgan and Margaret Osborne Robinette. She was a
member of Pacolet Mills Baptist Church and retired from Pacolet
Manufacturing Co.
Survivors include a daughter, Georgia Marie Sutton of Pacolet Mills; two
sons, James Fred Bowen of Whitney and Burl Buford Bowen of Bristol, Tenn.;
two sisters, Clara B. Fleming of Pacolet and Ella R. Foster of
Spartanburg; four brothers, Zack and Oren Robinette of Pacolet, Marion
Robinette of Gaffney, and Judge Robinette of Bristol, Tenn.; six
grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Floyd's Pacolet Chapel by the
Rev. Robert Ivey and Dr. Donald Reams. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial
Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pacolet Mills Rescue Squad,
Pacolet Mills, S.C. 29373.

LYMAN - Eddie Pittman Bowers, 83, of 513 Holly Springs Road, widow
of M.M. Bowers, died Monday.
Born in Greenville County, she was a member of the Tyger Baptist
Church and the WOW Circle.
Surviving are a daughter, Allie B. Sloan of Lyman; sons, Theo G.
Bowers of Hendersonville, N.C., and Carl, B.O. Bowers of San Antino,
Tex.; brothers, J.M. Pittman of Greenville, Carl Hughes of Marietta,
Ga., Ansel Hughes of Greer and Ruthel M. Hughes of Charleston; sisters,
Leona Cox of Greer, Florence Edwards of Taylors and Vera Boswell and
Inez Pace of Greenville; five grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wood Mortuary; committal will
be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

LEVI BOWERS
GREER, Dec. 19 - Levi Bowers, 62, farmer of the Brushy Creek section,
died at 5 o'clock this afternoon at a Spartanburg Hospital, following
two years of declining health, and a serious illness of three days. He
was a son of the late Levi and Ann Harrison Bowers.
Mr. Bowers was twice married. His first marriage was to Miss Frances
Wooten. From this marriage the following children survive, Ruey, Leo,
Vanoy and Cecil Bowers, and Mrs. Zula Mae Skinner. His second marriage
was to Miss Margaret Reed who survives with three sons, Herbert, Alvin
and Harold Bowers. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ida Pittman and
Mrs. W.C. Howard, and 17 grandchildren. He was a member of the Pelham
Baptist Church.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Wood Mortuary.

April 12, 1938- OSCAR BRAGG, 66, resident of the Stone Station
community of this county, died last night at a local hospital following a
lingering illness.
Surviving are his wife, MRS. EMMA BRAGG and the following children, MRS.
H.C. CRISP, St. Louis, Mo., MRS. A.D. ASHMORE, Reading, Pa., EUNGENE
BRAGG, Moore, MRS. MINNIE L. LEE, Wellford, MISS ETHEL BRAGG, Sptbg., MISS
LYDIA BRAGG, Moore, JOHN BRAGG, Sptbg., MRS. RUTH BENNETT, Whitney, MRS.
ESTELLE CALDWELL, Fairforest, ROBERT BRAGG and CAROL BRAGG, Sptbg. , and
one sister, MRS. LOUISE FOSTER of Stone Station, also survive.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday from the Bethlehem Bapt. church,
Roebuck with DR. H.K. EZELL and the REV. CARL O. PAGE officiating. Burial
will be in the churchyard. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

GAFFNEY - Vertie Robinette Brannon, 90, of 503 Oakland Ave., died Feb. 25,
1990, in the Brookview House.
A native of Flag Pond, Va., she was the widow of Arthur B. Brannon and
daughter of the late Robert Lee and Nancy Brewer Robinette. She was a
member of Limestone Street United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Estelle B. Loveless of Greenville,
Marie McSwain of Spartanburg, and Ruth Brown of Gaffney; two sons, Ernest
B. Brannon of Gaffney and Robert T. Brannon of Pillamook, Ore.; her
stepmother, Betty Robinette of Gaffney; 19 grandchildren, 33
great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 tonight at the Shuford-Hatcher Funeral
Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Limestone Street United
Methodist Church by the Revs. Rose Marie Nivens, Stephen Boiter and T.
Perry Brannon. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

CHARLES BRIDGES DIED ON SATURDAY
Magistrate C.T. BRIDGES died Saturday afternoon at his home on East
Frederick Street. He had been in failing health for several weeks.
The funeral services were conducted at the late home Sunday afternoon by
the Rev. J.M. HAMRICK, pastor of the Cherokee Ave. Baptist Church.
Interment followed in Oakland cemetery with the following as pallbearers;
E.R. PARKER, W.W. THOMAS, C.S. POOLE, CALVIN PENNINGTON, LEE RIPPY, and
T.M. CALDWELL.
Confederate veterans, members of the Jake Carpenter camp, U.C.V. , placed
flowers on the grave. The following veterans acted as honorary
pallbearers; N.C. SNEAD, I.M. PEELER, D.A. THOMAS, MOSES WOOD, PROF. W.L.
JOHNSON, CAPT. H.P. GRIFFITH, J.A. PEARSON, and WILLIAM R. LIPSCOMB. Other
veterans present were WILLIAM CHILDRES and S.R. THACKSTON.
Among those from out of town attending the funeral were two brothers of
the deceased, J.H. BRIDGES of Spartanburg and W.M. BRIDGES of Charlotte.
Other relatives present were PAUL BRIDGES and MISS MAE BRIDGES of
Spartanburg, WOFFORD BRIDGES of Charlotte and R.F. JENNINGS of Orangeburg.
CHARLES THOMAS BRIDGES was 71 years of age, having been born April 5,
1846, near Limestone, where he was reared. He was the son of HENDERSON
BRIDGES, who was killed in the Civil War. Magistrate BRIDGES, although
under the age limit, enlisted in the Confederate army at the breaking out
of the war and served the entire four years with distinction. He was
slightly wounded in the ankle but the injury was not serious and did not
prevent him from remaining in the army.
Upon the conclusion of the war he returned to his old home , marrying MISS
TEXANA WOOD two or three years later. The deceased worked at various
trades during his life time, including merchandising, butcher work ,
farming and other vocations.
For the past 12 years or more he served as magistrate in Gaffney, he was
also chairman of the Cherokee county pension board.
He was a member of the Cherokee Ave. Bapt. church.
The deceased is survived by his wife and the following children, all of
whom live in Gaffney; MRS. W.M. BROOM, MRS. W.D. KIRBY, MRS. T.A.
LAVENDER, MRS. J.E. RAINES, MRS. F.L. WALL, MISS SALLIE BRIDGES, C.S.
BRIDGES, and C.DEWEY BRIDGES.
one sister, MRS. DORA BYARS, of this city, and two brothers, J.H. BRIDGES,
Spartanburg and W.M. BRIDGES , Charlotte also survive.

yesterday . The body was shipped to Spartanburg and was taken to the home
of his mother near Poplar Springs. The funeral services will be held from
Poplar Springs church this afternoon, conducted by the REV. W.H. WATERS.
The late MR. BRIDWELL is survived by his widow, MRS. WESTOVER BRIDWELL;
one child, his mother, MRS. LOU BRIDWELL, and 3 brothers, R.W., J.H., and

a life-long resident of this county, died at a local hospital yesterday
afternoon after a brief illness.
MR. BROWN was born and reared at Fairforest. He had lived in the county
all his life. He was engaged in farming and was formerly a merchant.
He is survived by his wife, MRS. BESSIE BROWN; 3 daughters, MRS. J.G.

Whitestone station, died yesterday at 2 o'clock, after an illness lasting

be held today at one o'clock at Pacolet Baptist Church. Rev. R.A. BROCK,
pastor will conduct the services.
MR. BROWN was a member of the Glendale Methodist church. He was a
prosperous farmer. A widow and 3 children survive.

LITTLE GIRL DEAD RESULT OF BURNS
FAY BROWN, the 7 year old daughter of MR. and MRS. W.C. BROWN , was burned
to death Yesterday. She received burns yesterday afternoon when her
clothes became ignited from a burning newspaper. She died last night at
the home of her parents on Bomar Ave.
The little girl , together with companion of about the same age, visited a
neighbor house, next door and in the front yard the little girl lighted a
newpaper. The paper blew against her dress and in a few seconds the tot
was in flames from head to foot. The little girl was carried into the
house and DR. W.B. LANCASTER summoned but medical assistance could do
nothing .
No funeral arrangements had been announced last night. |

GREER, Sept 25 -- Mrs. Ida Franklin Center Brown, 77, resident of 4 2nd
Street, Victor Mill died Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. in a Spartanburg Hospital
folowing an illness of the past four days.
Mrs. Brown had been a resident of Greer, for the past 45 years, and
became ill while visiting at the home of her brother-in-law, Ben Center
at Wellford. She was born in Morganton, N.C. and was a daughter of the
late J.S. and Jennie Smith Connor and was a member of the Victor Baptist
Church.
Mrs. Brown was married three times, her first marriage was to Hugh
Franklin and from this marriage two sons survive, Robert and Hugh
Franklin of Morganton, N.C. Her second marriage was to J.H. Center and
from this marriage one son survives, Fred Center of Greer. Her last
marriage was to T.B. Brown who died a number of years ago.
Surviving also are three brothers, Luther Connor of Shelby, N.C.,
Richard Connor of Rutherfordton, N.C. and George Connor of Columbia; two
sisters, Mrs. Dolly Proctor of Kings Mountain, N.C., Mrs. Ollie
Chrisenberry of Gastonia, N.C.; 19 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Wood Mortuary.

J.W. BROWN DIES AT HOME IN CITY
JAMES WILLIAM BROWN, 56, a brother of Mayor BEN HILL BROWN and former
president of the Cowpens Manufacturing Co., died Sunday morning at his
home , Boyd St., after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the late residence,
conducted by the REV. HENRY WADE DuBOSE, pastor of the First Presbyterian
Church. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Active pallbearers; J.W. COBB, F.C. ROGERS, FOSTER RICE, M.R. CASH, T.W.
CREWS, BRIAN FLOYD, H.W. KIRBY and J.M. GLASSCOCK.
MR. BROWN was born at Asbury, Union Co., Feb. 21, 1878, the son of
RANDOLPH R. and LOU WOOD BROWN. While still an infant his parents moved to
Cowpens, where he resided until 1919.
He was elected mayor of Cowpens several times. In 1919, he moved to
Spartanburg and engaged in the automobile business.
MR. BROWN was a member of the Cowpens Baptist Church and a member of the
Masonic Shrine and Knights of Pythias Lodges.
He is survived by his widow, formerly MISS MARGARITE COCHRAN of Bunnell,
Fla., one daughter , MISS JAMESINE BROWN, a student in the Sptbg. High
School and three brothers, Mayor BROWN, H.M. BROWN , of Gaffney and JONES
BROWN of Mount Airy, N.C. |

AFTER a lingering illness of several years, MRS. MARY P. BROWN, widow of
the late WILKES BROWN, died at her home near Cleveland, Tenn., the 19th
inst. , in the 69th year of her age. The deceased leaves one child, a
daughter, MRS. SALLIE HARRIS; several grandchildren, 2 sisters, MRS.
FRANCES ALBRIGHT and MRS. ELIZABETH GUY { or GAY ? } and one brother, the
latter the editor of this paper- and numerous other relatives and friends
to mourn her death.
Although a great sufferer for a long term of years, she bore her
afflictions with true Christian resignation and died loved and respected
by all who knew her and in bright hope of a glorious immortality.

BURKE, on Thursday, March 10th, 1892. She was 80 years old and had been
paralyzed a year. She left seven children and twenty-two grand children to
mourn her loss, which is her eternal gain. She left good evidence behind
that she was going to rest. She was buried at the family grave yard on
Saturday evening.

DEATHS - Wednesday, Nov. 23
CHARLES B. BURNETT, familiarly known as " JACK" BURNETT, died yesterday at
half-past four o'clock at the home of his parents, MR. and MRS. R.C.
BURNETT at Cross Anchor. He had been ill for several months.
MR. BURNETT'S home was at Beaumont, Texas, but when the physicians in that
city were unable to do anything for the malady which resulted in his death
, he came to his parents, his wife, who was MISS JULIA NOBLE of Texas and
young daughter, CORINNE, accompanying him. The disease left him a cripple
and he had to be carried to his parents home in an ambulance of the Bobo
Undertaking Company.
HE is best known as the captain of the Wofford College baseball team,
which in 1899 and 1900, defeated all the other collegiate teams in this
part of the country.
MR. BURNETT was 35 years old and was born in Spartanburg county. He
graduated from Wofford in 1900. Soon afterwards he went west and amassed a
fortune in the oil and lumber fields of Texas and Oklahoma.
He is survived by a widow and daughter, his parents and several brothers
and sisters. He is a nephew of J.J. BURNETT, recently elected probate
judge.
The funeral services and burial will be at Cedar Shoals Church at 3
o'clock this afternoon. |

Oct. 7 – The funeral of Mrs. Ola Bailey Burnett, 64, resident of Reidville
township near Fairmont, will be conducted Sunday at 11:15 a.m. at the
Poplar Springs Baptist church, with the Rev. Jennings Johnson, the Rev.
James Stroud and the Rev. David Watson officiating. Burial will be in the
Poplar Springs Baptist church cemetery.
Mrs. Burnett died Friday after a three-month illness. Her health had been
declining several years. She was the daughter of the late Austin and
Elvira Cox Bailey and had resided in this community all her life.
Mrs. Burnett is survived by her husband, Jim Burnett of near Fairmont;
three sisters, Mrs. Lola Burnett of Clinton, Mrs. Temple Cantrell of
Chesnee and Mrs. Amelia Hughes of Pelham; and one grandson.
Active pallbearers at the funeral will be Marshall Pruitt, William Owens,
Arthur Genobles, Charles Pearson, David Pearson and James Miller.
Deacons of the Poplar Springs and Fairmont Baptist churches will comprise
the honorary escort.
The body is at the residence.

MRS. BESSIE BURRELL
LANDRUM, May 15 - Mrs. Bessie Burrell, 37, died this morning at
1:30 o'clock at her home in upper Spartanburg County near Holly Springs
Baptist Church after twelve days illness. She was born and reared in
North Carolina but had been living in this section for the past five or
six months.
Mrs. Burrell was the daughter of R.N.Tessner and the late Mrs. R.N.
Tessner, of Buncombe County, N.C. She was a member of the Point Fork
Baptist Church in Buncombe County.
In addition to her father she is survived by her husband, Charles A.
Burrell; five sons, Harry Burrell, Buncombe County, Carl, Fred, C.A. and
J.C. Burrell, all of Lyman, Route 1; four daughters, Misses Nervie,
Altie, Elsie and Olcie Burrell, all of Inman, Route 1; two brothers,
Bess and Gnat Tessner of Buncombe County; four sisters, Mrs. Sidney
Webb, Spartanburg County, Mrs. Lawrence Burrell, Landrum, Route 3, Mrs.
Calvin Harwood, Buncombe County and Mrs. Charley Galloway, Madison
County, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock
from Bethel Baptist Church near Campobello by the Rev. T.E. Reid.
Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

ALVIN BURRELL
CAMPOBELLO - Alvin Burrell, 86, of Rt. 2, Campobello, died Friday
at 6:50 p.m. in a Spartanburg hospital after a week of illness.
He was a retired farmer, a native of Weaverville, N.C. He was a
member of Gowansville Baptist Church. He was a Mason and Woodman of the
World.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Judith Gosnell Burrell; three daughters,
Mrs. Roy Kilpatrick of Brevard, N.C., Mrs. Clarence McGinnis of
Campobello, and Miss Ethel Burrell of the home; three sons, Charlie
Burrell of Landrum, Sam Burrell of Columbus, N.C. and Robert Burrell of
Campobello; two sisters, Mrs. Cris Gentry and Mrs. Dovie Hale of
Barnsville, N.C.; two brothers, Charlie Burrell of Landrum and John
Burrell of Barnville.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Petty Funeral Home in
Landrum

DUNCAN, Mar. 2 - Jessie Austin Burrell, 54, resident of the Abner
Creek section on Duncan, Route 1, died at 4:45 this afternoon at a
Spartanburg hospital, as a result of an injury received three months ago
when a tree fell on him, while he was cutting wood near his home. He was
the son of the late Nathan Burrell and Lou Monk Burrell.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Howard Burrell; one daughter,
Miss Frances Burrell; one son, Gwenn Burrell; one half sister, Mrs. W.Z.
Wilson and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the
Abner Creek Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. D.R. Hill, assisted by
Rev. J.A. Howard and Rev. T.E. Reid. Burial will be in the Church
cemetery. The following are asked to meet at the Church at 10:45 to
serve as pallbearers: Melvin, Alvin, Carroll, Harold, Fay and Alton
Burrell. The Deacons of the Abner Creek Church will compose the honorary
escort. After 2 o'clock Sunday, the body will be at the home.

DUNCAN - John Burrell, 84, of Rt. 1,
Duncan, died Thursday at 6:50 a.m. at the home of a son, Harold Burrell,
after three weeks of illness.
Native of upper Greenville county, son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. William Burrell, he was a member of Tigerville
Baptist Church. He had lived with his son in the Abner Creek community
26 years. His wife, Mrs. Alice Edwards Burrell, died in 1955.
Surviving in addition to his son are two
other sons, Alvin and Carroll Burrell of Greer; 12 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted
Saturday at 3 p.m. at Abner Creek Baptist Church by Rev. William Myers,
Rev. Hubert Finley and Rev. Paul Burck. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill
Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Otis,
Claude, Cecil, Eugene and Jimmy Burrell and Horace Hammett.
The body will ber taken to the home of
his son, Harold Burrell, Friday at 2 p.m. and will be placed in the
Church Saturday at 2 p.m.
Wood Mortuary of Greer is in charge.

LANDRUM, Oct. 31 - L.A. Burrell Sr., 72, died at his home at 7:30
a.m. Monday. He had been in declining health several years. He was born
and reared in Buncombe County, N.C., but had spent a number of years in
upper Greenville and Spartanburg Counties.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jane Tesneer Burrell; three daughters,
Mrs. Esther Harwood of Bernardsville, N.C., Mrs. Louise Eubanks of
Campobello and Mrs. Myrtle Green of Boiling Springs; three sons, V.R.
and Clyde (Doc) Burrell of Landrum and L.A. Burrell Jr. of Campobello;
three brothers, Charlie and Alvin Burrell of Campobello, and John
Burrell of Barnardsville; two sisters, Mrs. Dovie Hale of Barnardsville
and Mrs. Lydie Hale of Barnardsville and Mrs. Lydie Gentry of Democrat,
N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Walnut
Hill Baptist Church by the Revs. Alfred Scoggins and Furman Jackson.
Burial will be in the Church cemetery. He was a member of Oak Grove
Baptist Church in Greenville County.
Pallbearers will be Roy Green, Bobby and Billy Eubanks, Ralph and
Oliver Harwood and Roy Burrell. The body will be taken from Petty
Funeral Home at 9:30 Wednesday to the residence

Ave., died Tuesday.
Born in Campobello, son of Mrs. Jane T.
Burrell of Bernardsville, N.C. and the late L.A. Burrell, he was a
mechanic for Claussen's Bakery.
Surviving also are his wife, Mrs. Grace
Plumley Burrell; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Edwards of Stuttgart,
Germany and Mrs. Evelyn Griffin of Easley; two sons, Frank Allen Burrell
of the U.S. Marines, Japan, and Larry Burrell of the U.S. Navy; two
sisters, Mrs. Laura Eubanks of Campobello and Mrs. Esta Hardwood of
Bernardsville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral plans will be announced by Petty
Funeral Home, Landrum.
The family is at the home of Doris Dill,
Rt. 2, Landrum.

MISS LEE is survived by two sisters, MRS. BETTIE COOK and MRS. PERRY LEE

of Clifton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday from the White Plains Bapt. church,
interment will be in the church cemetery.

UNION- Funeral services for GEORGE W. BYARS, 55, of Lockhart, who died at
the Wallace Thomson Hospital Wednesday morning after a 2 weeks illness
were to be conducted this afternoon at the Lockhart Bapt. Church, burial
was to follow in the Phillipi Church cemetery. Nephews were to serve as
pallbearers.
MR. BYARS was a WWI veteran and a member of the Woodmen of the World.
