ABBOTT
DAVIDSON
Laurensville Herald
Dec. 22, 1905
MR. ABBOTT DAVIDSON died at 6:25 Sunday evening. The end came while he was
surrounded by friends and fellow members of the orders to which he
belonged.
There was one incident connected with the death-bed scene that was most
touching. As the spirit of MR. DAVISON was taking its flight, his faithful
sweetheart, who had been at his side since he was shot down, knelt beside
his bed and repeated the Lord's prayer. There were a dozen or more men in
the room and every one of them broke down and wept like children. His
spirit went accompanied by the prayers of his faithful sweetheart, who
would have become his wife in a few days.
A TRAGEDY AT GAFFNEY
Gaffney - Friday morning the usual quiet of the city was disturbed , about
8:45 o'clock by the report of a revolver, fired three times in quick
succession, followed by the screams of women crying " murder". The police
responded to the call from the Piedmont Inn. As they went in a man came
out calling for a doctor. An investigation showed that GEORGE HASTY shot
and instantly killed MR. MILAN BENNETT, musical director of the " Nothing
But Money" company , which showed here Thursday night and possibly
mortally wounded ABBOTT DAVIDSON, the comedian and star performer. It was
DAVIDSON who came down the steps calling for a doctor.
The sheriff and police arrested HASTY and lodged him in jail. The coroner
was notified and impaneled a jury.
The tragedy was caused by a charge of insult to a lady member of the
company.
{ later... HASTY stated he shot in self-defense, and regretted the
occurrence very much. Don't know the outcome }

TWO CHEROKEE MEN KILLED EACH OTHER
Gaffney, Nov. 22 - I.P. SARRATT and REVIS DAWSON killed each other at
SARRATT'S home, just over the county line of Cherokee county, yesterday
afternoon at 6 o'clock. DAWSON was SARRATT'S grandson and was about 25
years of age. Sarratt was 67.
Going to the Sarratt's house, Dawson, it is said, sat down and talked
quietly with the old man, showing a copy of the divorce which he had
recently obtained from his wife in N.C. Dawson suggested that they walk
out to the hog pen. According to the statement of MRS. SARRATT, who said
that her husband reached to the mantel and took down his revolver, which
was in a scabbard and that Dawson saw him do this, then MRS. SARRATT
continued , she heard her husband say , " If you do I will-" and then the
shooting commenced.
Dawson emptied his pistol and Sarratt shot twice. Only one ball took
effect in Sarratt, he being shot through the right breast. Both men died
immediately after being shot, neither of them speaking.
