ELIZABETH EARLE

DEATH OF MRS. EARLE
Greenville, June 21, 1904- After a lingering illness of weeks , MRS. ELIZABETH EARLE, widow of the late R.H. EARLE, died at the family residence near this city yesterday morning. She had reached the ripe age of 72 years. MRS. EARLE was the youngest daughter of DR. WILLIAM IVOR of Charleston. She was born in Greenville, January 23, 1848. Thirty-five years ago she moved to the city of Greenville and has lived here since that time. Her married life covers 53 years and was richly blessed. Nine children were born to them, 7 of whom are still living:
J. EDWARD, ELIAS, T.W., PROF. M.D. EARLE and MISS SALLIE IVOR EARLE, of Greenville; MRS. J.S. SMATHERS, of Asheville. One of the sons, JOHN EARLE died about 4 years ago in this city and another died at 15 years of age. Her husband, after a long prosperous and honorable life, died July 31, 1901.

PACOLET - Mrs. Laura Gentry Earley, 87 of Route 1, widow of Newton R. Earley, died 11 a.m. Monday in Spartanburg General Hospital after a long illness.
Daughter of the late Dave and Debbie Roland Gentry; attended Tate Memorial Mission.
Surviving from first marriage: son, Ernest Grooms of the home; daughters, Mrs. Emiline Scoggins of York and Mrs. Zettie Black of the home.
Surviving from second marriage: daughters, Misses Esteline and Essie Mae Earley, both of the home; sons, Manson of Pacolet and Jesse Earley of Valdosta, Ga.; sisters, Mrs. Kate Lee of Pacolet and Mrs. Lula Ledford of Gaffney; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
Services 3 Wednesday at Pacolet Baptist Church by the Revs. Robert Glazner, and Clyde Green; burial in Pacolet Cemetery.
Body at home 11 today; in church 2 Wednesday.

JAMES HENRY EASLER

Chesnee, June 8, 1940- The funeral of JAMES HENRY EASLER, 58, farmer of the Cherokee Springs community, who died Friday will be conducted Sunday at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist church.
Active pallbearers; CLAUD STEVENS, MACK McABEE, J.D. EASLER, CURTIS POTEAT, HARRISON BURNETT, W.M. TATE, JAMES JOHNSON and WADE JOHNSON.
MR. EASLER was the s/o the late WILLIAM and VINIE EASLER and had spent his entire life in the community. He had been a member of the Cherokee Springs Baptist church for many years.
Surviving are his wife; MRS. NORA GAULT EASLER; 2 daughters, MRS. LEVABA HOOPER and MISS ADA EASLER; 7 sons, CHARLES, CLARENCE, FRED, HUBERT, LAURENCE, OSCAR and ROBERT EASLER; 2 brothers, J.EASLER of Cherokee Springs and W.R. EASLER of Gaffney; and 2 sisters, MRS. LAURA CHESNEY, Spartanburg and MRS. MARY BOOKOUT of Spartanburg and 18 grandchildren.

William David Edge
 
    William David Edge, 67, of Spartanburg, route 3, died at a local hospital Monday afternoon following a brief illness.
    Mr. Edge was born and reared in this county. For many years he made his home in the Poplar Springs community.
    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie Edge; three sons, Fielder Edge of Laurens, Clyde Edge of Greenville, and Troy Edge of Poplar Springs; five daughters, Mrs. O.L. West, of Beaumont, Mrs. E.C. Thomas of Tucapau, Mrs. P.M. Lavender of Woodruff, Mrs. Lee Broom of Besmer City, NC, and Miss Maggie Edge of Spartanburg route, one sister, Mrs Maggie Crim of Moore, route 1; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
    Funeral services will be conducted at the Poplar Springs Baptist church at 4 o'clock this afternoon by the Rev. Carl O. Page and the Rev. C.B. Prince. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
    Active pallbearers will be Willburn West, Leonard West, C.P. West, Winston Thomas, Leland Boyster and ElRoy Edge.
    The body was taken from the M.W. Bobo funeral chapel Monday night to the home of Mrs. O.L. West, 641 Nordland street, and will remain there until the hour of service.

 

BELTON EDWARDS

BELTON EDWARDS  
GREER, Oct. 20 - Belton Edwards, 66, prominent citizen and farmer of Friendship community died this afternoon at 6:30 o'clock at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Edwards was a son of the late William and Latha E. Edwards. He was a member of the Zoar Methodist Church.  
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lizzie Reynolds Edwards and the following children: Mrs. Annie Christopher, Inman; Mrs. Minnie Miller, Tuxedo; Mrs. Ethel Wilson and Misses Pearl and Iris Edwards, all of Wellford, Route 2; five half-brothers, Berry and Broadus Reynolds, Inman; Rufus Reynolds, Greenville; Harvey Reynolds, Tigerville; Carl Reynolds, Greer; one half-sister, Mrs. Mary Holden, Boiling Springs, and 13 grandchildren.  
Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 11 o'clock from the Zoar Methodist Church, conducted by his Pastor, the Rev. D.H. Tucker, assisted by the Rev. W.Y. Cooley and the Rev. W.Y. Henderson.  
Interment will be made in the Church cemetery.  
Active pallbearers will be Horace and Dean Reynolds, Robert and Boyce Holden, Learley Edwards and Sam Frady.  
Honorary pallbearers will be Broadus Smith, Fred Moore, Dr. J.C. Moore, Coke Hughes, Dr. J.N. Ayers, A.C. Dotson, L.M. and George Southern, Chester Woodward, J.H. Armstrong, R. Perry Turner and T.E. Rector.  
After noon Thursday the body will be at the residence until the hour of the funeral.

T. BELTON EDWARDS  
GREER, Oct 21  --  Funeral services for Thomas Belton Edwards, 66, will be held on Friday morning at 11 o'clock at the Zoar Methodist Church and will be conducted by his Pastor, the Rev. B.H. Tucker, assisted by the Rev. W.Y. Cooley, the Rev. George D. Greer and the Rev. W.Y. Henderson. Burial will be made in the Church cemetery.  
The death of Mr. Edwards occurred suddenly at his residence in the Friendship community at 6:30 o'clock Wednesday evening. He was a prominent citizen and farmer and until recent years was engaged in the mercantile business. He was a member of the Zoar Methodist Church for a long period of years.
MRS. ELIZABETH R. EDWARDS

MRS. ELIZABETH R. EDWARDS  
LYMAN, April 22 --  Mrs. Elizabeth Reynolds Edwards, 92, died at her home, Lyman, Route 1, Thursday at 6:10 p.m. following declining health for the past year and a serious illness of one week.  
She was a daughter of the late Pierce and Catherine Mayfield Reynolds and had been a resident of Spartanburg County for the past 85 years. She was the oldest member of Zoar Methodist Church. She was married to Belton Edwards who died 15 years ago.  
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. R.E. Miller, Greenville; Mrs. W.T. Waddell, Lyman; Miss Iris Edwards and Mrs. E.D. Wilson, both of Lyman, Route 1; one sister, Mrs. Carrie Poole, Birmongham, Ala.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Wood Mortuary in Greer.
MILDRED EDWARDS

MRS. MILDRED EDWARDS
   LANDRUM  -  Mrs. Mildred Gosnell Edwards, 46, died at her home in Landrum at 12:45 p.m. after several months declining health.
   She is the daughter of the late John and Cynthia Morris Gosnell.
   Surving are her husband, Jake Edwards; one daughter, Mrs. Sue Wofford of Columbia; one son, John Dean Edwards of Landrum; two brothers, Andrew of Campobello Route 1 and Lewis of Chesnee Route 1; one sister, Mrs. Essie Gosnell of Campobello Route 1; and two grandchildren.
   Funeral arrangements will be announced by Petty Funeral Home.

 

G. FELIX ELLIS

Gaffney- G. FELIX ELLIS, 80, native of Spartanburg County died at Cherokee County Nursing Home today following 3 years of declining health.
He was a retired machinist and established ELLIS BICYCLE SHOP in Gaffney in 1919.
MR. ELLIS was the son of the late JOHN WALLACE and MARY ELIZABETH PRICE ELLIS.
Funeral services will be held Friday at Shuford- Hatcher Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
Surviving are ; 5 daughters, MRS. J.L. FARISH, MRS. A.V. HERMAN and MRS. PERRY FARISH, Gaffney; MRS. J.ROY JOHNS of Charleston and MRS. MELVIN JOHNSON of Washington, D.C.; 6 sons, AUDEL, GARLAND, and DEAN ELLIS , Gaffney, W.R. Spartanburg, SPIVA ELLIS of Forest City and FELIX ELLIS JR. of Charlotte; also 26 grandchildren and 22 gt.
Also surviving are one brother, MACK ELLIS of Shelby and 5 sisters, MRS. O.Z. REYNOLDS, MRS. VIRGIE HAMRICK, and MRS. MAY GASTON, all of Shelby; MRS. ROLAND TATE of Grover and MRS. GORDAN LAWING of Rutherford, N.C.
 
ZENORA ELMORE

DEATH OF MRS. ZENORA ELMORE
MRS. ZENORA ELMORE, widow of the late MR. MATTHEW ELMORE of the county, died Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter, MRS. LUDY F. NELSON, in the northeastern part of the city. MRS. ELMORE had been an invalid for some years and had made her home with MR. and MRS. NELSON for quite a while. She was 87 years old and was a member of the Baptist Church, a consecrated Christian.
The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at six o'clock at Mount Pleasant Church, the REV. S.H. TEMPLEMAN conducting the services.
 
DRAYTON L. EPTING

DEATH CLAIMS VETERAN
Newberry, Feb. 8- DRAYTON L. EPTING, 96, a gallant Confederate veteran died Thursday afternoon at his home near Chapin. MR. EPTING was a member of Company 15 of the 20th South Carolina regiment of the Confederate army. He was an active citizen of his community and had a wide circle of friends. He was an active and life-long member of the Macedonia Lutheran church and was an officer in the church for 60 years.
The funeral service were held Saturday at Macedonia, conducted by Rev. E.Z. PENCE, pastor. Interment was in the church cemetery.
MR. EPTING belonging to a family noted for its longevity and the majority of his close relatives live to around 80 to 90 years and some almost 100. He was the son of the late WILLIAM EPTING and ROSA FULMER EPTING. His wife who before marriage was MISS KIZZIE { ? } , who preceded him to the grave 22 years ago.
He is survived by two sons, S.C. EPTING , Chapin and C.L. EPTING of Columbia; six daughters, MISS HENRIETTA EPTING, Chapin, MISS MARY EPTING, Chapin, MRS. E.J. SHEALY, New Brooklyn, and MRS. J.H. KEEN, Peak, MRS. G.F. SENS, Silvertree, MRS. PAULINE MEYS, Washington, D.C. Also surviving are one brother, JAMES L. EPTING, Leesville and a sister, MISS MISSOURI EPTING, Leesville, also survive.
The active pallbearers; W.H. DERRICK, O.T. SUMMERS, E.E. MERCHANT, H.C. DREHER, W.D. RAUCH, W.J. BUCHANAN, E.O. WESSINGER. The honorary pallbearers will be officers of the church.

WILLIAM JACKSON EVINGTON

GRAMLING  -  William Jackson Evington, 75, died at his home here Saturday morning following several months of declining health.
 
Mr. Evington was connected with the Gramling Corp. for a number of years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World Camp at Gramling.
 
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Carrie Gosnell Evington; 5 daughters, Mrs. A.J. Harris and Mrs. Fannie Mae Page, both of Gramling, Mrs. J.C. Coley Sr. and Mrs. Adolphis Newman, both of Campobello, and Mrs. Lewis Collins of Inman; 5 sons, James, Floyd and Roy, all of Gramling, Grady of Spartanburg, Troy of Campobello and Herman of Gramling; 29 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one half-sister, Mrs. Hattie Cochran of Inman.
 
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Gramling Methodist Church with the Rev. M.B. ____ and the Rev. Guy Lawson officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery.
 
Active pallbearers will be Charley J_____, Volney and Samuel Evington, Cecil Harris and A.J. Harris Jr.
 
The body is at the home and will be placed in the Church at 1:30. The Petty Funeral Home of Landrum is in charge of arrangements.
