CAPTAIN PATRICK HOY
The Carolina Spartan
1860
Obituary
Captain Patrick Hoy, died at his residence in this District, on the
6th July after an illness of only a few days, in the seventy-fourth
year of his age.
His attack, which perhaps, was hypoplaxy, was sudden and severe, and
baffling, all remedies, bore him from earth to his long home.
He was a native of Antrim county, Ireland, emigrated to this
State in 1804,being then about 17 years old. A few years after
emigrating hither he married and settled where he died, having lived
there a little more than 50 years.
For many years he was employed as a gunsmith and to his fidelity and
faithful work numbers of persons can well attest. He was a member of
the Baptist Church twenty-five years and during the greater part of
that time served in the office of deacon with judgment and Christian
faithfulness.

order he had been a devoted member for many, many years.
A large concourse of people was there. The funeral was conducted by
the REV. MR. SOUTHWORTH, his pastor, assisted by REV. MR. AIKEN, a
former pastor, and by REV. MR. SHELL of the Methodist Church. All
these men of God paid beautiful tributes to his Christian character
and great usefulness to the church and state.
A Presbyterian layman, who was present in the congregation could not
refrain from expressing his high appreciation , whom he had known
from early boyhood and who had served with him in the same company
of the Confederate army, and who had been intimately associated with
him in lifes work till his removal from the neighborhood in which he
was born and had kept up the intimacy as far as practicable till his
death. He bore testimony to the many tributes paid by the able
divines who preceded him and showed that we could expect nothing but
the highest Christian by one deceased as was brother HOY, he having
been a Scotch Irishman, whose ancestors in Scotland were the
disciples of JOHN KNOX, the great protestant reformer and apostle of
civil and religious liberty from there going over to Ireland to
protestanize it, and finally coming to America at the beginning of
the last century.
It may not be out of place here to state that the father of Brother
HOY started from county Antrim, Ireland, being then 18 years of age,
with his father and mother, that they were 3 months on shipboard;
that the father died on the sea and was kept 3 weeks till landing in
Charleston, S.C., where he was buried ...

BELOVED ENGINEER TAKES LAST JOURNEY
Seneca, Jan. 19- The friends here of
J. RAYMOND HUGHES were greatly saddened by the news of his sudden
death at his home in Walhalla Sunday night. " Ramey' was known by
everybody. There was not a small boy along his whole run that did
not know his whistle and felt a peculiar admiration for his hero
everytime he heard "RAMEY" pull it. And every adult felt a
satisfaction everytime he entrusted his life to the Blue Ridge
railroad if he knew that " RAMEY" was at the throttle. He will be
missed for many years to come, and the sorrow of his family is
shared by the whole community.
J.C. HUGHES , of Edgefield, and
MR. and MRS. N.W. CALLETT of Salisbury, N.C., spent Friday night at
the Oconee Inn, en route to Walhalla to attend the funeral of J.

JOHN
D. HUMPHRIES
Spartanburg Herald
Sept.30, 1908
JOHN D. HUMPHRIES LAID TO REST AT OAKWOOD
The funeral service over the remains of JOHN D. HUMPHRIES, who died
Sunday afternoon of Bright's disease, was held yesterday morning in
the parlors of the SPARTAN INN, with Masonic honors. The funeral
sermon was preached by the REV. J.L. OUTZ, pastor of the Baptist
church at Inman, and a life-long friend of the deceased. REV. OUTZ
was assisted by REV. W.P. SMITH and REV. J.W. SHELL. The singing at
the service was especially beautiful... a large crowd gathered at
the Inn to do honor to the memory of the kind host. The occasion was
a most solemn one. The Hotel guests in the lobby talked in whispers.
The servants of the house moved about with silent tread. The bustle
so customary at the well-known Inn was subdued to a veritable
murmur. The good host was sleeping.
It was a solemnly imposing sight when the plumed Knights marched in
and took their places around the bier of their fallen comrade. A
guard crossed swords above the recumbent form and with hats in hands
and bowed heads the rank and file marched passed the casket and took
a farewell look at the face and form of the one they loved so
well... the interment followed at Oakwood. A large concourse of
relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting ,
place where he sleeps today beneath a wilderness of flowers, sweet
tokens of life eternal, placed there by loving hands. Following are
those who acted as pallbearers:
F.L. LILES, C.E. EPTON, R.E. CUDD, J.T. JOHNSON, A.M. LAW, R.D.
BLOWERS, J.M. CONNOR and J.N. CUDD.
As the funeral procession moved up Main street, the city bell was
tolled in respect to the memory of MR. HUMPHRIES , who was for many
years an alderman.
