MILL WORKER AND WIFE DIE DURING BLAZE IN
HOUSE
Joe Johns, 37, Apalache Mill employee,
and his wife, 32, were burned almost beyond recognition when fire of
undetermined origin destroyed their mill village home yesterday morning
shortly before 7 o'clock.
A jury impaneled by Spartanburg County Coroner A.M. Cash at the scene
returned a verdict that Joe Johns and his wife, Lonnie Hinson Johns,
came to their death by being in a burned house with the doors locked
while having domestic trouble. Apalache is about two and a half miles
from Greer in Spartanburg County.
SAY HAD TROUBLE
Deputy Sheriff R.L. Lister of the staff of Sheriff B.B. Brockman of
Spartanburg, said neighbors testified that the two had been having
domestic difficulties and that the man had said he was going to kill his
wife, set the house afire and kill himself.
Neighbors arrived at the scene a short time before 7 a.m. to find the
doors of the Johns house locked and too much flame and smoke to effect a
rescue, Deputy Lister said.
SECOND HOUSE FIRED
Fire Chief R.B. Colvin of Greer said the Greer fire department was
called at about 7 o'clock when a house next to the Johns caught fire
and widespread damage was feared. The fire next door was extinguished
and when firemen were able to enter the Johns home they found him on a
bed and her lying in the kitchen in front of an oil stove.
Mr. Johns is survived by his Father, Furman Johns; four brothers,
Rubert, Mac, Jay and Jonah JOhns, and two sisters, Mrs. Guynell Inman
and Mrs. Essie Cannon. Mrs. Johns is survived by two brothers, Harrison
and John Howard, and her Mother, Mrs. Della Howard.
