OBITUARY - April 6, 1846
DIED, of an appoplectic convulsion, on the morning of the 10th of February
last, at the residence of her husband, MRS. MARGARET G. NANCE, wife of MR.
F. NANCE, in the 30th year of her age...connected with the Presbyterian
church, of which she had lived and died a consistent member.
She left a husband and five children, together with a large circle of
relations and friends, to mourn her loss, but not as those who have no
hope. Cut down in the midst of high health and bright prospects of a long
life, her premature death re-echoes the solemn warning " be ye also ready
".

SPARTAN SURGEON DIES IN TEXAS
A telegram from Brownsville, Texas yesterday announced the sudden death of
DR. T.E. NOTT, following a stroke of paralysis. He was formerly and for
years one of the leading physicians and surgeons of this city and has many
friends here. He had been living in the west for several years on account
of his health. His body will be brought here for interment Friday. The
funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Surviving are his widow, MRS. S.F. NOTT, his son, T.E. NOTT, his mother,
MRS. T.E. NOTT and his sister, MRS. J.H. SLOAN, all of the city and his
daughter, MRS. A.A. JAMES JR., of Winston-Salem, N.C.

RUSTY NEEDLE THE CAUSE
Brownsville, Texas, Nov. 24- DR. T.E. NOTT, a physician of Spartanburg,
S.C., residing here for his health, died today from tetanus. Infection
came from a rusty needle. DR. NOTT was 48 years old and a graduate of
Tulane University.

A VETERAN OF THE MEXICAN WAR DEAD
Asheville, N.C. Dec. 24- JONATHAN NOWELL, aged 88 years , veteran of the
Mexican and Civil Wars and who sought to enlist for the Spanish American
War, died at the home of his son, CHARLES NOWELL at West Asheville
yesterday morning.
MR. NOWELL was a deputy sheriff of Wake county this state when troops were
mustered in the Mexican war and enlisted in Co. I of the 12th regiment ,
composed almost entirely of North carolinians and saw much active service
during the campaign....
He was born in Wake County, N.C., on August 3, 1820 but for the past many
years had been a resident of Buncomb county. He was the last of the
Mexican war veterans in this county.

W.B. O’Sullivan, 39 died
yesterday in a Columbia hospital after a long illness. He resided on Bomar
Avenue in this city.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs.
Fay Randall O’Sullivan of Spartanburg; two children, Elizabeth and Joan;
five sisters, Mrs. C.O. Lawter, Mrs. H. E. Cudd and Misses Gladys and
Sarah O’Sullivan of Spartanburg, and Miss Grace O’Sullivan of Charlotte;
his aunt, Miss Sallie Ward of Spartanburg; his father, T.J. O’Sullivan of
Spartanburg. He was a brother-in-law of L.V. Randall of Spartanburg.
Funeral
arrangements will be announced later.

PACOLET - William J.[Z.] Osborne, 84, of Pacolet Route 1 died in
Spartanburg General Hospital Wednesday after a long illness.
Mr. Osborne was a native of Blackwater, Va., a son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Johnny Osborne.
Surviving are: His wife, Mrs. Janie Willis Osborne; four daughters,
Mrs. George Willis, Mrs. Carl Jones, and Mrs. Dewey Padgett of
Pacolet Route 1; two sons, John of Kingsport, Tenn., and Lewis of
Blackwater; a sister, Mrs. Parolee Glass of Pacolet Mills; one
brother, John of Dayton, Oh; 17 grandchildren; and nine Great
Grand-children.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 4:30 at Brown's Chapel
Baptist Church at Pacolet Mills by the Rev. Clyde Peterson. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Albert Buice, Fred and William Padgett, Fred,
Bascom and Franklin Glass.
The body will be at the home on Pacolet Route 1 after 2 p.m. Friday.

MRS. ALVIN OWENS

MRS. ALVIN OWENS, 25, died at her home Sunday afternoon after a
week's illness. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Rabun
Creek Baptist church, conducted by her pastor, the REV. B.F. CARSON
of Gray Court, assisted by REV. W.A. BALDWIN.
MRS. OWENS is survived by her husband and one daughter, CORRINE,
seven and an infant son, her parents, MR. and MRS. D.F. GILBERT and
a brother, ROY, all of Laurens.

MRS. R.W. OWENS
CAMPOBELLO -- Mrs. Effie Hines Owens, 89, of Campobello, died
Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. at Spartanburg after several years of
declining health.
She was born in Spartanburg County, a daughter of the late Isom
and Vinnie Burns Hines; She was a member of Campobello Baptist
Church. She was first married to the late Fuller Page. She next
married the late Robert W. Owens.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Betty Green of Valley Falls;
four step-daughters, Mrs. Lewis Floyd of Greer, Mrs. Myrtle
Dobbins of Campobello, Mrs. Gladys Peace of Calhoun Falls and Mrs.
Lillian Nodine of Abbeville; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Weaver of
Inman and Mrs. Lela Hughes of Greenville; one brother, Walter D.
Hines of Columbus, NC; nine grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 4 p.m. at
Campobello Baptist Church by Rev. R.C. Fisher, Rev. Guy Lawson and
Rev. J. Ray Batson. Burial will be in Inman Baptist Church
Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Barker, Sam Nethertone, William
Brannon, Edward Burns, W.D. Hines Jr., and LeFoy Crain.
The body is at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Betty Green and
will be placed in the Church at 3 p.m.. Petty Funeral Home is in
charge.

WORLD WAR VETERANS HONOR DEAD COMRADE
Private ELLIS OWENS, Company I, 119th infantry, 30th Division, who
was killed in action near Cambral, was buried at Pauline yesterday
with military honors. A squad from the local post of the American
Legion and from the Veterans of Foreign Wars attended. The religious
services in the church were conducted by the local pastor, but at
the grave DR. JOHN W. FRAZER, Chaplain of the dept. of S.C.,
American Legion. Taps were sounded by HUGH GENTRY and CARL
LITTLEJOHN. The details from the two organizations were as follows:

April 3, 1903MRS. MARY OWENS, mother of MRS. R.P.
MILAM, of this city, died at her home near Winnsboro, Sunday last.
Aged 70 years. The deceased was the widow of the late MITCHELL
OWENS, who moved from this county some years since. MRS. MILAM was
with her mother when she died.

OWINGS

The body of MISS LIZZIE OWINGS, formerly of Owings, was brought home
Wednesday from Conway, where she died Tuesday night, after an
illness of only a few hours, and interment made yesterday at Dials,
of which church the deceased was once a valued member. MISS OWINGS
was a stenographer and for several years filled positions at
Greenville and Columbia. On account of declining health she gave up
her work some time ago but after recuperating went to Conway where
she was engaged in similar work until her almost sudden death.
The deceased was a daughter of MR. TOM OWINGS, by whom she is
survived together with two sisters, MISS ANNA OWINGS and MRS. A.M.
OWINGS.

THOMAS J. OXNER

KINARDS, April 2- The funeral of THOMAS J. OXNER, who died at this
place on Thursday, was held yesterday at Fairview Baptist church, of
which he was a prominent and useful member. Several hundred people
in the community and many from a distance were in attendance as a
mark of respect and as evidence of the esteem in which he was held.
His pastor, the REV. R.H. BARRIS of Kinards paid a high tribute to
the memory of this splendid citizen.
MR. OXNER, who was just 46 years of age , had spent all his life in
this section. He was a large farmer and had made a wonderful
success. He was well known for deeds of kindness . His wife who was
DELLA FOSTER, survives him. He also leaves a brother and sister and
many other relatives and friends.
