HENRY
WALTER WHARTON
Laurensville Herald
Feb. 25, 1898
HENRY WALTER WHARTON
Son of W.H. and I.E. WHARTON, was born October 7, 1879 and died October
26, 1897. He was happily converted June 25, 1896. There are few boys about
whom can be said so much as can be said about WALTER. From his very
childhood he was quiet and obedient. His fine character, lovable
disposition won for him the love of his companions and commanded the
confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He felt called to the ministry
and entered Wofford College, passed through his freshman class, but during
vacation was stricken with typhoid fever. All the skillful physicians and
devoted nurses could do for his recovery was in vain.
He retained consciousness to the last, bidding mother and loved ones
adieu, and as the angels took him by one hand, he stretched forth the
other saying " Good bye, Papa", and with this said, his pure spirit winged
its flight through the gates into the Paradise of God...Good bye Walter.

P.C. WHEELER
Generously contributed by
Blair Wheeler
P. C. WHEELER -
Another of our soldiers is gone. From this lower sphere of action and
perilous duties, he has gone to a world of rest above. We allude to P.C.
WHEELER, who was killed in the battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The
deceased was born in this District, on the 15th January, 1839. He was a
volunteer member of 13th Regt., (Col O. E. Edwards’) and, at the time of
his death had been in laborious service for nearly two years. During his
camp life he maintained that exemplary, christian deportment which he was
so distinguished at home. A member of the Baptist Church at Holly Springs,
- he never threw off the armor of a christian - nor by deed nor speech, in
the slightest degree tarnished the pious character he had assumed.
Socially, he had many attractive virtues - frank, generous, brave, and
true; he made a reliable friend and a superior soldier. The hopes of a
christian animated him in the battles of life as well as those of the
“tented field.” To the rest of the righteous he has gone.2
