 Adair, George W. – Born July 4, 1846, Fountain Inn.  Enlisted September 1862, Co. l., 10th S.C.V., Capt. Edward Roberts.  Slightly wounded in front of Atlanta.  Farming.

 Brown, Joe – Born at Spartanburg.  Enlisted in 1864, Co., B. Capt. John Wheeler, 22nd S.C.  Farmer

 Ballard, Tom – Born Nov. 20, 1841, Polk County, N.C.  Enlisted Co. K., 50th Reg., Capt. Sam Wilkins.  Farming.

 Barnett, William H. – Born April 13, 1842, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted Aug. 21, 1861, Co. B., 1st S.C.V. Cav., Capt. N.N. Nesbitt.  Wounded at Gettysburg, third day of battle.  Farmer. 

 Brannon, Rufus – Born July 14, 1846, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted May 1864, Co. A., 1st S.C. Bat., Capt. D.A. Smith.  Transferred to 3rd Reg.  Farming.

 Brannon, Augustus G. – Born Nov. 6, 1841, near Boiling Springs.  Enlisted about Nov. 3, 1861, Co. C., Holcombe Legion, Capt. Jno. Earle Bomar.  Was in quartermaster’s department at close of war.  Wounded at Petersburg Oct. 7, 1864, on picket lines.  Farmer.

 Byars, Joseph – Born Oct. 22, 1832, Union.  Enlisted Sept. 3, 1861, Co. F., 18th S.C. Reg., Capt. Felix Walker.  Wounded at Petersburg, Va., April 2, 1865.  Farming.

 Bragg, Jonas Brewton – Born March 23, 1844, near Woodruff.  Enlisted Dec. 27, 1861, Spartan Guards, Holcombe Legion, infantry, Capt. W.P. Roebuck.  Was prisoner at Point Lookout at close of war.  Farming.  “Served in the Army of Northern Virginia in 1862.  In Mississippi in 1863, siege of Charleston, fall of 1863, and in siege of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865.  Captured in the enemy’s works on March 23, 1865 after making a successful charge in their lines.  I was 21 years old the day I was captured.”

 Burroughs, Thaddeus C. – Born April 12, 1836, Mobile, Ala.  Enlisted 1861, Co. C., 3rd Reg., Capt. Benjamin Kennedy.  Transferred from Richmond, Va., to Charleston, S.C.  Wounded at Petersburg in front of the blow-up.  Farmer.  “I was transferred from Richmond, Va., to Charleston, S.C., then back to Petersburg, Va.  Was wounded through shoulder and was confined in bed 15 months.” 

 Bonner, Andrew Jackson – Born Feb. 12, 1848, Grassy Pond.  Enlisted Oct. 20, 1864, Co. E., 4th Reg., Capt. J.S. Ezell.  Was promoted to 3rd lieutenant.  Was 3rd lieutenant at close of war.  Preaching and farming.  “Our army was disbanded at Spartanburg after surrender.”

 Bradley, Thomas D. – Born Feb. 22, 1846, Rutherfordton, N.C.  Enlisted Feb. 22, 1863, Co. I., 50th N.C. Reg., Capt. John Eaves.  Farming.

 Bright, Toyyas – Born May 6, 1841, near Spartanburg, Enlisted 1861, Co. C., Evans’ Regiment, Capt. May, Slightly wounded in last year of war at Jackson, Miss. Farming

 Cannon, William Clark – Born Aug. 24, 1841, New Prospect.  Enlisted Aug. 1861, Co. C., 13th S.C. Reg., Capt. D.R. Duncan.  Discharged from regular service and went into a mounted home guard company.  Was first lieutenant at close of war.  Merchant.

 Clifton, Wesley H. – Born March 27, 1835, Union Co., Enlisted August 1861, Co. B., 15th S.C. Reg., Capt. William Gist.  Wounded in the battle of the Wilderness and Gettysburg.  Farmer.  “I remember all the battles, but took no special note of any incident that I can relate, as I never have been reconstructed.  I have never attended any reunion.”

 Carlisle, Dr. James H. – Born at Winnsboro, May 4, 1825, graduated South Carolina College, 1845; professor of mathematics, Wofford College, 1854-1875; president Wofford College, 1875-1902; president emeritus 1902-1909; died at Spartanburg, Oct. 21, 1909.

 Casey, James – Born 1834, Hobbysville, S.C.  Enlisted May 1862, Co. E., Capt. George Dean, 2nd S.C.  Farmer.

 Christopher, Meredith B. – Born Jan. 6, 1837, at Reidville.  Enlisted Feb. 1861, Co. K., 5th S.C. Reg., Capt. William Choice.  Wounded at James Mill, June 27, 1862.  Farming.

 Crow, Robert C. – Born Feb. 26, 1849, near Enoree.  Enlisted Dec. 1861, Co. B., 1st Reg. S.C.V., Capt. N.N. Nesbitt.  Wounded July 11, 1863, Boonesboro, Md.  Farming.

 Castleberry, Frank B. – Born July 8, 1848, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted 1864, Co. A., 4th S.C. Reg., Capt. Wright.  Farming.  “I was just a piece of a soldier.  I belonged to the little boy crowd, 4th S.C. State Troops.”

 Connor, W.M. – Born Dec. 7, 1847, Charleston.  Enlisted August 1864, Co. F., 2nd Reg. S.C. Art., Capt. Tom Legare.  Cotton and banking and salesman.  “I surrendered with Johnson’s army at Greensboro, N.C., April 26, 1865.  Was in picket skirmishes on James Island, S.C. and picket skirmishes in North Carolina, and at battle of Averysboro, N.C., and also a battle of Bentonville, N.C.  Was never wounded, but had several balls to go through my hat and coat.  Had my right and left man cut down several times in engagements.”

 Cantrell, J.C. – Born Feb. 28, 1840, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted June 1, 1861, Co. K. Hampton Legion, Capt. J.C. Camp.  Transferred to 16th N.C. Reg.  Wounded at Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862.  Farming.  “Helped take 11,000 prisoners at Harper’s Ferry.”

 Dickson, David Samuel – Born Feb. 9, 1847, Greenville Co.  Enlisted May 10, 1864, Co. B., 1st S.C. Reserve Force.  Farming.  “During the war I had a very serious case of measles, which I have never gotten over from exposure.  I know of no information I can give in connection with the war.”

 Dorrill, William Henry – Born Feb. 9, 1830, Charleston.  Enlisted April 1862, Marion’s Men of Winyah, 7th S.C. Cav., Capt. John H, Tucker, Detailed report Capt. Joseph Brown at Georgetown, S.C. Assistant quartermaster at close of war.  Commission merchant, county official and merchant.  “Went in camp at Camp Marion at Georgetown, S.C., Nov. 1861.  Ordered to Pawley’s Island, coast defense, by Gen. A.M. Manigault, where mustered into Confederate service in April 1862.  Ordered to Virginia, May 1862.  Remained in service until surrender of General Robert E. Lee.”

 Dearman, Samuel Decatur – Born Dec. 23, 1830, near Ashville, N.C. Enlisted October 1861, Reeley Rifles, Greenville Reg., Capt. T.B. Roberts.  Contracting and building. “We enlisted for one year. When reorganized, enlisted for three years, or during the war.  Elected other officers.  Then I belonged to the 16th S.C. Reg., orderly sergeant Co. A., Capt. C.M. McDunklin, Col. McCulough.  I was taken sick at ****, Miss., on the 12th of December 1864.  The regiment left me at Salem, Ala.  The general was wounded in the foot and could not ride and left his horse for me to ride home.  I was at the surrender.  He gave me furlough for 20 days after I delivered his horse.  The surrender came on me at home.”

 Dillard, John Turner – Born Nov. 14, 1832, Laurens County.  Enlisted April 23, 1862, Co. B., 13th S.C. Reg., Capt. Ben Brockman.  Wounded Aug. 23, 1862, second battle of Manassas.  Farmer.

 Dillard, G.M. – Born 1844, near Clinton.  Enlisted 1862, Co. G., 16th S.C. Reg., Capt. Gilreath.  Farming.  “In battle near Atlanta, Ga., and Franklin, Tenn.”

 Drummond, Seaborn Simpson – Born Sept. 20, 1844, near Woodruff.  Enlisted Sept. 1862, Co. B., 1st S.C. Cav., Capt. Niles Nesbitt.  Farmer.

 Erwin, Thomas G. – Born March 20, 1854, Spartanburg District.  Enlisted first of war, Co. A., Holcombe Legion, Capt. A.C. Brown.  Farming.

 Ezell, Samuel Bryson – Born Feb. 8, 1847, Spartanburg County.  Graduated from Wofford College, 1875.  Enlisted June 1864, Co. D., 2nd Bat. S.C. Reserves, Capt. D.H. Smith.  Was second sergeant and battalion guide at close of war.  Deputy sheriff 1868-73; student at Wofford College 1873-75; merchant 1876-1910.

 Ezell, Landrum C. – Born May 16, 1843, near Gaffney.  One year Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  Enlisted June 28, 1861, Cowpens Guards, 9th S.C. Reg., Col. Blanding commanding, Capt. William M. Foster.  Re-enlisted Feb. 8, 1862, Co. H., Palmetto Sharpshooters.  Promoted to second sergeant, after disabled, commissary sergeant, Bratton’s Brigade.  Wounded at Frazer’s Farm, June 30, 1862, and Spottsylvania May 12, 1864.  Preacher.  “Participated in the following battles; Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Gaines’ Mill, Frazer’s Farm, in 1862; in the Wills Valley fight in 1863; in the Wilderness, May 6, 8, and 12, 1864; in quite a number of skirmishes and smaller battles.  At Frazer’s Farm wounded in left arm and hand; in the evening of the 12th of May shot in right hand and thigh near Spottsylvania.  Joined the regiment in August 1864, and was in the commissary department until the surrender.  Heard General Lee’s address to the soldiers, not far from the apple tree near where my wagons were packed.”

 Epting, George – Born in 1836, Newberry.  Enlisted 1864, Co. I., 9th  S.C. Reg., Capt. W.D. Camp.  Transferred to 5th S.C. Reg.  Promoted to orderly sergeant of 5th Reg.  Carpenter.

 Fowler, William Dixon – Born April 21, 1844, Laurens County.  Enlisted July 1862, Co. E., James’ 3rd S.C. Bat., Capt. W.H. Fowler, (my father).  Was orderly sergeant at close of war.  Principally planting.  “Was severely wounded at Snod Grass Hill and Chickamauga, was slightly wounded at Knoxville, Tenn., was captured at battle of Cedar Run, Va., but escaped at night; was dangerously wounded at battle Spottsylvania Court House, Va.  Our battalion was partly or wholly engaged in all the principal battles of Virginia.  The company went in 120 strong and was recruited along during the war and my recollection is that there were only about 20 at the surrender, which occurred at Greensboro, N.C., April 1865.

 Franklin, Young F. – Born August 19, 1841, in Union County.  Enlisted April 1, 1861, Co. D., Capt. Tom Ferguson, 3rd S.C.  Was scout for Johnson army at close of war.  Wounded at Cedar Run October 1863.  Farmer.

 Gardner, Newman A. – Born March 11, 1833 in Cleveland County, N.C.  Enlisted in 1861, Co. K., Capt. John Brown Jenkins.  Was nurse in hospital at close of war.  Farmer.

 Galbraith, R.D. – Born Nov. 13, 1848, Yorkville, S.C.  Enlisted Nov. 17, 1864, Co. G., Capt. Robert McClure, 4th Regiment.  Promoted to Orderly Sergeant.  Merchant.

 Green, John W. – Born Feb. 23, 1848, near Wadesboro, N.C.  Enlisted March 1864, Co. B., Freeman’s Bat., Capt. Henry Allen.  Farming and merchandising.

 Gentry, L. Miles – Born Oct. 19, 1826, Spartanburg.  Enlisted in Co. K. under Capt. Joe Walker, Jenkins’ Regiment.  Transferred to quartermaster’s department to take tax in time.  Farmer and sheriff.  “Deputy United States Marshall sent me to Washington, D.C., with Col. Avery and James Herndon, of York County, and Robert Aldrich, of Barnwell.  Was there 57 days waiting Ku Klux committee.  Came home and was arrested as a Ku Klux; kept in Castle Thunder with about 85 Democrats three weeks.  Sent to Columbia jail; was in room with 7 sheriffs and ex-sheriffs.  Never got before United States commissioner.  Still under bond.”

 Gowan, M.V. – Born Oct. 13, 1833, Spartanburg Co., Enlisted July 16, 1861, Co. 1, Holcombe Legion, Capt. W.P. Bishop.  Was promoted to corporal.  Wounded Aug. 30, 1862, at second Manassas.  Farmer

 Gordon, Francis Marion – Born Dec. 8, 1836, Laurens County.  Enlisted April 10, 1861, Co. D., 3rd S.C. Reg., Capt. T.B. Ferguson.  Was first lieutenant at close of way.  Wounded at Chancellorsville, Va., May 2, 1863.  Farmer.

 Hill, G.W. – Born May 25, 1839.  Enlisted September 1861, Co. A. Capt. Bill Smith.  Holcombe Legion Infantry.  Was in prison at close of war at Point Lookout.  Farmer.

 Howe, Henry – Born July 30, 1848, Wellford.  Enlisted October 1864, Co. l., 4th S.C. Reg., Capt. Tom Wood. Carpenter.

 Hall, John C. – Born Jan. 26, 1831, New Prospect.  Enlisted July 1, 1862. Co. F., 7th S.C. Reg., Capt. Head.  Wounded Sept. 12, 1862, Sharpsburg, Md.  Farming

 Hembree, W.M. – Born Dec. 4, 1846, Union County.  Enlisted July 1864, Co. A., Ballinger’s Bat., Capt. Daniel Smith.  Transferred to Gist’s Guards.  Farmer.  “I went out with the S.C. Reserves, 1864.  In January 1864, I was transferred to the Gist Guards, Capt. Chichester, Heavy Artillery.”

 Hill, G.W. – Born May 23, 1839, Tennessee.  Enlisted Sept. 1861, Co. A., Holcombe Legion, Infantry, Capt. Ben Smith.  Was in prison at Point Lookout at close of war.  Farming.

 Holtzclaw, Thomas W. – Born Oct. 12, 1845, Spartanburg Co., Wounded in 1864at Fort Harrison, near Petersburg.  Farmer.  “I enlisted first in Co. H., Holtzclaw Co., Heyward Bat., James Island, 1863, Transferred to Co. F., 1st Reg. S.C.V., Bratton’s Brigade, in 1864.  I was with General Lee when he surrendered at Appomattox or near that place.  Louis Southern, at Greenville, was captain.”

 Hughey, James R. – Born Feb. 28, 1839, Newberry.  Enlisted Aug. 29, 1861, Thickety Rifles, Capt. Boyd, 15th S.C.V. Promoted to 1st Corporal.  Wounded July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pa.  Farmer

 Irwin, T.A. – Born Sept. 18, 1846, Greenville.  Enlisted spring of 1864, Spartan Rangers, attached to 1st S.C. Cav., Capt. W.T. Wilkins.  Southern Railway clerk, freight office.  “Spring of 1862, while with Holcombe’s Legion – I, at age of 15, and my father, William Irwin, at age of 44, fought side by side on march to battle, coming to swollen stream, I carried our guns and my father carried me, only one got wet.  In 1865 my life was saved by being a good swimmer.”

 Jackson, Stephen – Son of Henry Jackson and Mary Blakeney.  Born in Chesterfield County, S.C., Feb. 14, 1808; his parents then living in the northwestern part of the county, where he also lived during his entire life.  He was elected to the legislature and served as a member from this county two terms, from 1832, and was also re-elected after the war, serving in the early seventies.  From 1852 to 1854 he held the office of sheriff and was with Judge Henry McIver.  Also held the office of county commissioner for thirty-seven years and there, perhaps, has been no citizen of the country who knew it better or was better known throughout its bounds.  He was a man of robust health and was rarely ever sick.  On the 18th day of November 1887, he died at his home, near Mr. Croghan, at the ripe age of nearly eighty years. 

 Johnson, J.J. – Born Aug. 7, 1839, Greenville County.  Enlisted August 1861, Co. F., 13th S.C. Reg., Capt. Compton.  Wounded Dec. 13, at Fredericksburg.  Farming.  “Lost left arm.”

 Johnson, Richard Neptune – Born Oct. 14, 1840, Rutherford County, N.C.  Enlisted Feb. 1862, Co. G., 1st S.C. Rifles, Capt. W.H. Pennonneau.  Farming.  “Served most of the time with heavy artillery around Charleston.  Was at Averysboro and Bentonville, and surrendered at Greensboro.”

 James, Jas. M. – Born Sept. 16, 1840, Union County.  Enlisted June 3, 1861, Co. F., 5th Reg. S.C.V., Capt. A. H. Foster.  Re-organized into Co. I., 5th Reg. Capt. William Camp.  Was in prison at Fort Delaware at close of war.  Slightly wounded at Seven Pines.  Farming.  “Was not sick a day during war and never missed guard duty or roll call.”

 Jeffreys, John Floyd – Born Nov. 14, 1848, at Yorkville.  Enlisted Nov. 17, 1864, Co. G., 4th S.C.M., Capt. Robert McClure.  Was sergeant at close of war.  Clerking and merchandising.

 Kimbrell, J. S. – Born March 3, 1842 in Spartanburg.  Enlisted in 1864. Co. B., Capt. William Smith Johnson Battalion.  Farmer.

 Kirby, A.H. – Born Jan. 1, 1829, Spartanburg County.  Academic education.  Enlisted January 1861, Jenkins’ Regiment, State Troops, Capt. John Beason.  Transferred to quartermaster’s department.  Quartermaster for tax in kind at close of war.  Farmer, county commissioner and magistrate.  “I was at home the most of the time during the war.  My business before the war was merchandising.  Two of my clerks volunteered and both were killed, or died.  One was killed in the battle of Seven Pines, in Virginia, the other died in Charleston while in service.  Not being in a condition to go to the front at the beginning of hostilities I was placed in the quartermaster’s department.”

 Knight, Miles Marion – Born Jan. 24, 1830, near Reidville.  Enlisted in fall of 1861, Co. B., 13th S.C. Reg., Capt. B.F. Brockman.  Wounded at Cold Harbor, Chancellorsville,  Spottsylvania, Deep Bottom and Fussel’s Mills.  Farmer.  “Surrendered at Appomatox.”

 Killian, David E. – Born Feb. 4th 1838, Catawba County, N.C.  Enlisted in 1861. Co. A. Capt. W. Goss, Palmetto Sharp Shooters.  Carpenter.

 Knighton, Miles Oliver – Born Jan. 29,1834 on Tyger river.  Enlisted Dec. 25, 1861, Co. E., 18th S.C. Reg. Capt. A.M. Tucker.  Farming.

 Knight, Miles Marion – Born Jan. 24, 1830, near Reidville.  Enlisted in Fall of 1861, Co. B., Capt. B.F. Brockman, 13th S.C. Regiment.  Was wounded at Cold Harbor, Chancellorsville, Spottsylvania, Deep Bottom, and Fussells Mills.  Farmer.  Surrendered at Appomattox. 

 Leonard, John Percy – Born June 14, 1846 at Reidville, Enlisted August 1864, Spartan Rangers, Capt. William Wilkins.  Farmer

 Littlejohn, James Andrew – Born Oct. 25, 1841, Pacolet Mills.  Enlisted Feb. 1861, Co. G., Pacolet Guards, 5th S.C. Reg., Capt. J.Q. Carpenter.  Was corporal at close of war.  Wounded at Seven Pines, May 5, 1862.  Farmer.

 Law, Thomas Hart – Born Aug. 26, 1838, Hartsville.  Graduated at the Citadel and Charleston & Columbia Theological Seminary.  Enlisted July 1863.  Chaplain at Fort Caswell, N.C.  Minister.  “I was in the theological seminary when the war began, and after entering the ministry was sent by my presbytery to serve as chaplain in the army, and went for that purpose to Fort Caswell, N.C.”

 Lee, Jerry R. – Born Oct. 15, 1847, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted August 1864, Co. B., 1st S.C. Bat., Capt. Daniel Smith.  Transferred to Co. K., 3rd Reg.  Farming.  “I surrendered with Johnson’s army in North Carolina, returning home May 15, 1865.”

 Lucas, Robert Hume – Born Aug. 16, 1825, Charleston.  Enlisted in beginning of war and served through to the end.  Was engineer of coast defenses generally.  Never higher rank than that of captain of engineers.  Varied and eventful.  “Did all I could, as best I could.  Am too feeble to write incidents, personal or otherwise, but make effort to tell of a little thing I never have seen in any history of the war.  Over the gate of Fort Sumter floated a large flag and on its face were the words ‘Lasiate ogul sperangavoie che outrante’   all arranged by General Ripley and the interpretation,  ‘Who enters here leaves all hope behind.’  All taken from the Italian poet, Dante, who gives these words as being on the portals of hell.  All remained until finally shot to pieces by the guns of the enemy on Horn’s Island.  I merely mention the circumstance, as it has never appeared in any history of the war, that I know of.  Old Sherman said once ‘War was hell.’  He did much to make it more so.  ‘Now on the brink of the River Jordan and about to cross over a breaking old canoe, without ballast and a broken paddle.’”

 Mahaffy, Madison Powland – Born May 1, 1842, Spartanburg.  Enlisted in 1861, Co. I. Capt. Ed. Roberts, 16th Regiment.  Wounded near Atlanta, June 1863.  Farmer.

 Morgan, Levi Jefferson – Born May 10, 1840, Greenville County.  Enlisted in winter of 1862, Co. H., 16th S.C.V., Capt. Fusman.  Slightly wounded at Greensboro, doing picket duty in 1865.  Farming and cotton milling.

 Moore, Nathan N. – Born 1831, North Carolina. Enlisted 1861, Co. K, SC reg., Capt. Bridges. Farming.

 Montgomery, Benjamin Landrum – Born April 10, 1841, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted August 1861, Co. I, 7th Texas Reg., Capt. William Brown.  Wounded May 12th at Raymond, Miss.

 Morrow, George A. – Born Aug. 12, 1848, Glenn Springs.  Enlisted Nov. 1864, Co. A., 4th S.C. Reserves, Capt. Thomas Wright.  Farming.

 McElrath, R.T. – Born Nov. 18, 1842, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted Dec. 28, 1862, Co. E., 2nd S.C. Cav.  Wounded at Sugar Loaf, S.C., by explosion.  Farming.  “I was in battle at Gettysburg in 1863.  I was forced to retreat and swim the Potomac River.  My pony was small and washed away.  I caught to the tail of a large Morland horse in front of me and went safe.”

 Moseley, James H. – Born Nov. 29, 1839, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted Aug. 27, 1861, Co. E., 13th Reg., Capt. J.L. Wolford.  Farmer.  “I was in twenty-three pitched battles besides the small ones and skirmishes.  I was never wounded.  I was with Jackson when he was shot.”

 McKinney, Thomas Inbilee – Born Aug. 18, 1845, Rutherford County, N.C.  Enlisted 1862.  Co. T., 1st N.C. Cavalry, Captain Thines.  Private.  Farmer.

 McMillin, John Washington – Born May 26, 1837 at Fingerville.  Enlisted February 18, 1861, Co. F., 1st Reg. Capt. Compton, Col. O.E. Edwards.  Wounded at Fredericksburg December 18, 1861.  Severe wound in arm.  Farmer.

 Miller, Edward Belton – Born June 27, 1844, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted 1863, Co. A., Holcombe Legion, Captain A.H. Prown.  Wounded in battles around Petersburg March 5, 1865, Farmer.  “Was in principal battles around Petersburg and served awhile at Fort Sumter.”

 McAbee, Thomas Jefferson – Born June 15, 1845, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted Jan. 10, 1862, Co. I., 5th S.C. Reg. Captain Bill Camp.  Farming and cotton milling.

 Oxley, Stephen – Born Nov. 18, 1842, Lenior County, N.C.  Enlisted 1861, Co. A., 3rd N.C. Reg., Capt. Robert Drazeel. Wounded May 3, 1863, at Chancellorsville.  Farming. 

 O’Shields, W. D. – Born Nov. 29, 1838, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted Co. F., 13th S.C.V., known as Pacolet Volunteers, Aug. 27, 1861, and served throughout the entire war.  Was taken prisoner April 9, 1865, and carried to Washington and held there until the assassination of President Lincoln, after which he was transferred to Johnson’s Island, Sandusky, Ohio, where he remained a prisoner of war until its close.  He was wounded at North Anna River May 13, 1864.  He participated in Seven Days fighting around Richmond, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Gettysburg, Spottsylvania and others.  After the war he entered the profession of teaching, which he followed for 35 successive years.  For the past few years he has been in very ill health and unable to do any work.

 Thomason, James A. – Born Jan *, 1842, Burke County, N.C.  Enlisted May 7, 1861, Co C. 16th Reg., Capt John Pickens.  Farmer.  “At Cumberland Gap, Tenn., Nov. 7, 1863, our command was captured under command of Gen. Fraser.  Twelve hundred men were surrendered with the understanding that we were to be **** the ground.  Then we were but under a strong guard and marched *** days, got to Lexington before ** struck the train.  The next place we found ourselves was in Camp Donglass at Chicago, shut up until Robert E. Lee surrendered and the treatment we got there will be a disgrace to the government in ages to come, where it is known to shut men up and serve them to eat dogs and rats.  They can’t do anything worse.  There are several things I would like to acquaint on with, but I guess I had better stop.  I have a piece of poetry I composed concerning our capture and I would like for you to give it a place in The Herald, and if you please send me one copy of the paper.”

Joseph Walker.  Was major of 13th Reg. at close of war.  Wounded at last battle of Fredericksburg.  Physician.  “After remaining in Charleston for some time, the regiment disbanded and entered the Confederate service.  I came home, made up a company, which became Co. E., 13th Reg., Col. Edwards.  At the last battle of Fredericksburg my right thigh was broken and shattered with a Minnie ball, from which wound I am still suffering.” (photo listed)

 Wood, Thomas Jefferson – Born Jan. 8, 1844, Greenville County.  Enlisted August 1861, Co. B., 38th Georgia, Capt. McCleskey.  Farmer

 Williams, John Henry – Born April 19, 1841, Union County.  Enlisted August 22, 1861, Co. B., 15th S.C.V. Capt. William H. Gist.  Transferred to Gen. R.E. Lee’s headquarters.  Promoted to sergeant.  Was courier at Lee’s headquarters at close of war.  Wounded at Second Manassas, Aug. 30, 1862, and at Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863.  Farmer and magistrate.  “Twice wounded and disabled from field service; was detailed and sent to Gen. R.E. Lee’s headquarters and was sergeant in charge of couriers for Cols. James L. Corley, chief quartermaster, and R.G. Cole, chief commissary of Lee’s army.  These colonels were on Gen Lee’s staff.  I surrendered at Appomatox Court House with Lee’s army on April 10, 1865; got my parole the next day, and on the third day started for home on horseback, and reached my home in Union after about ten days’ ride.  Just after the surrender I was sent to Gen. Grant’s headquarters by the chief quartermaster of Lee’s army with a dispatch to Col. Lorrence, Grant’s chief quartermaster.  While riding on both sides of the road I viewed Grant’s splendid army, so finely equipped with everything pertaining to war.  I could only wonder how it was that Lee’s army could hold out so long against such odds as to numbers and resources.  But the end had come and I was in their midst, had fought them for four years, and the great Robert E. Lee, the general of the world’s generals, said stop the war and bloodshed, made his own terms of surrender, and the chivalrous general, U.S. Grant, accepted the terms and the war ended.  And forty-five years have passed and gone and may we have a happy reunion in Spartanburg Aug. 17-18, 1910.”

 Webster, John Robert – Born June 12, 1845, Walnut Grove.  Enlisted March 23, 1862, Co. F., 18th S.C. Reg., Capt. Sidney Walker.  Re-enlisted Co. K., 9th Reg., S.C. Cav. July 3, 1863, Capt. Harlan.  Was sergeant at close of war.  Farmer.  “I first enlisted for one year.  Being under age when my time was out I was discharged and on coming 18 years of age enlisted in Co. K., 5th S.C. Cav., commanded by Capt. J.G. Harlan.  I was captured Dec. 1, 1864, at Stoney Creek and spent the winter at Point Lookout.”

 Woodruff, Phillip P. – Born July 6, 1840, near Woodruff.  Enlisted Dec. 1860, Co. B., 1st S.C. Cav., Farmer.  “I was in several battles, was with Hampton all around Gettysburg and many other places.  There were four of us brothers in all in the same company.  Three of us went all through the war and only one got wounded.  We were in all the fighting that the regiment got in and all four living yet.  None of us has ever got any pension and don’t look for any.  One of us lives in Georgia, the other three are near where we were born.  The one in Georgia is 78, one 75, I am 70, the youngest one is 65.”

 Westmoreland, Jesse G. – Born Feb. 27, 1842, on Enoree River, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted Dec. 26, 1861, Co. F., Holcombe Legion. Capt. W.P. Roebuck.  Was mail carrier at close of war.  Wounded Aug. 23, 1862, on the Rappahammock River, Va.  Farmer.

 Westmoreland, J. White – Born Aug. 8, 1845, Cashville.  Enlisted Dec. 1862, Co. E., 14th S.C. Reg., Capt. H.F. Griffith.  Wounded at the Wilderness, 1864.  Farmer and merchant.  “I joined the army at Fredericksburg, Va., in Dec. 1862, Co. E., 18th S.C. Reg., McGowan’s Brigade, A.P. Hill’s Division, Jackson’s Corps.  Was in every battle that the command was in from the day I went in till we surrendered at Appomatox Court House April 9, 1865.  Was severely wounded at Chancellorsville and the Wilderness and Spottsylvania but never hurt enough to leave the hold and never missed a day’s duty, only on furlough, from the time I went in till Lee surrendered.”

 Ward, John W. – Born Dec.21, 1834, 12 miles south of Spartanburg.  Enlisted Aug. 25, 1861, Co. B., 1st S.C. Cav., Capt. Niles Nesbitt.  Was sergeant at close of war.  Wounded April 10, 1865, near Goldsboro, N.C.  Farming.

 Westmoreland, Sanford Preston – Born Sept. 17, 1843, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted 1862, Co. E., Holcombe Legion, Capt. W.P. Roebuck.  Transferred to 3rd Reg.  Wounded at Maryland Heights, Sept. 15 and at Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862.  Farmer.  “I went from Holcombe Legion to 3rd Reg., and in 1864 I was detailed as a sharpshooter to the 3rd Bat., at Winchester and stayed until just before the war ended.  I was sent back to my old Co. K., 3rd Reg.”

 Wood, James – Born Jan. 11, 1833, Spartanburg County.  Enlisted July 20, 1861, Co. I., 34th N.C. Troops, Capt. J.Q. Simmons.  Promoted from corporal to first lieutenant.  Was captain at close of war.  Wounded at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Petersburg.  Farming.  “I served from July 1861 to April 1862 as corporal, on 17th of April 1862 was elected first lieutenant.  On Sept 30, 1862 was promised to captain and served as such until April 9, 1865 and surrendered at Appomatox Court House, Va.
