United Daughters of the Confederacy -South Carolina Notes:
MISS BERTIE SMITH of Greer, reported one of the most active Children
of the Confederacy Chapters, with 72 members, of which she is director,
and creates much enthusiasm.
The Drayton Rutherford Chapter, of Newberry, through MRS. J.H.
SUMMERS, filed 110 Service Cross records at the recent convention. Mrs.
Summer was elected Recorder of Crosses.
The John Bratton Chapter of Winnsboro, has the distinction of having
in its membership the Poet Laureate of the South Carolina Division, MISS
KATE FLANIGAN. The prize poem was read at the State convention and the
winner crowned with the laurel wreath.
LEE - JACKSON Day was one hundred percent in observance. All over the
State fitting exercises were held, many in the events of dinners for the
veterans, their wives and widows and the 'Girls of the Sixties'. The
observance of the day in high schools is deserving of special mention.
