From US Highway 26 North take SJ Workman Hwy (SSR
50) towards Woodruff continue through Woodruff to S.C. 418 (Fountain
Inn Road). Take S. C. 418 west towards Crescent to S-42-558, which
will be on your left (this sign was only labeled on 1 side, very
small and easy to miss). Go .3 mile down the road to a dead end
road on the right (had a street sign “Phillips” I think). There are
a few mobile homes on this road—and I never would have found the
graves without the help of the gentleman mowing his lawn! The
cemetery is on the left side of the road just after the paved
portion ends (there is a trailer further back—that is too far). The
cemetery is very hidden from the road and the path quite overgrown.
The graves are under trees and very easy to miss. There are three
tombstones surrounded by a low rock wall. Mary Wofford’s tombstone
is on the left; Jesse Wofford’s tombstone is in the middle with a
sapling growing directly in front of it, and there is a toppled
stone which is now completely unreadable on the far right. There
are also numerous other field stones in the area, outside of the
rock enclosure, which appear to mark additional graves (most contain
a head and foot marker). If you go bring something to remove the
sapling from in front of poor Jesse’s grave! I am a descendant of
Jesse Wofford through his son Wade H. Wofford and the lines of an
old ballad have been going through my head ever since I visited this
cemetery: “There is one kind favor I’ll ask of you—see that my grave
is kept clean…”
In Memory of Mary Wofford who died Jan. 23,
1856, in the Sixty First year of her age. She was an humble devoted
Christian, having been truly an ornament to the Baptist Church. Her
life was characterized by honest industry; truth and devotion to the
Saviours cause; and in her death was manifest that Heavenly
confidence that conducts the Soul to endless bliss.
In Memory of Jesse Wofford who died Jan. 18,
1835, in the forty seventh year of his age. He had been for many
years a member of the Baptist Church sustained the character of an
upright correct citizen and Christian and by an honest life and firm
reliance upon the Saviour, was prepared to enter upon the joys of
the redeemed in glory.
The stone on the right is unreadable. The
Wofford Family cemetery appears in “Spartanburg County, S. C.
Cemetery Survey,” Volume 2, compiled by the Pinckney District
Chapter of S. C. Genealogical Society. This grave is stated to be
that of Andrew Jackson Wofford with the following transcription: “In
Memory/ of/ Andrew Jackson Wofford/ s/o Jesse & Mary Wofford/ who
died July 23, 1832/ in the Third year/ of his age./”
